My vote goes for Panatomic-X from the Eastman Kodak Company.

Best 35mm color film for what I shoot: Kodak 320T. It was replaced by peoples' preference for high-ISO low-noise digital cameras. Both are great tools, but 320T was very special stuff to me, and I hate not having it.

My only (and I mean only) gripe about it is that it was a 35mm-only emulsion.

Second on the list is Fuji Press 800. This is the pro version of the Superia 800 emulsion, which is available in any drugstore or supermarket. Luckily, it is still around, though I doubt any 800 film will be here for much longer.

Yet again, my only gripe is that it is a 35mm-only emulsion.

Best black and white film for what I shoot: HP5.

I have no gripes about it.

Second on the list is Delta 3200.

My only gripe about it is that it is not available in sheet sizes.

As usual, there is no "best", period. There is only "best" for a certain set of criteria.

T-Max.

Colour: Portra 160 NC. And what was it called again, Ektacolor Gold (GPX)?

I suspect that Curt knows there is no such thing as "best", and is being slightly tongue-in-cheek.

I have never been let down by FP4, which I've used since it was FP3. When I need the difference, I always go for HP5. For slow and careful, it's PanF. I've been an Ilford user since I was in short trousers, and that wasn't last Tuesday.

In its class, there's nothing to touch Kodachrome. I have one roll left of K25, and I'm going to use it up before the processing window closes. The same is true for my stash of K64.

Superia 800 (it's usually the press version that's supplied when I order it) is incredibly versatile, and finished prints rarely betray its speed, though it's a film that doesn't bear much underexposure, and I prefer to rate it at 640 or so.

Although I'm Ilford through and through for monochrome, Tri-X has to be regarded with affection by any photographer older than his teeth.

I wouldn't say best, but my current preferences are -
General use HP5+
Fast film Delta 3200
Sheet film FP4+

And I love Tri-X in 35mm, though I rarely shoot that format any more (it will come again though!).

Ilford Pan-F [although I probably use this more in 120 than in 35m some of my favourite ever 35mm shots were on Pan-F]
Fuji Acros
Fuji Neopan 400 [this is hands down the most consistent film I use. Never lets me down, although I sometimes get more engaging pictorial results from slower films. ]
Ilford XP2/Neopan 400CN
