To compare prices from the USA you have to add to the US prices about 20% european VAT, which than makes the US Kodak-Amazon price even higher than the german retailer one...

You also have to add state sales tax now for online orders in the US which we didn't used to. I'm not sure about local, to be honest, but the total will vary. Nowhere I know of though will even approach 20%. My old home state of TN has 9.something percent total, 9.25 to 9.5 I think, depending on locality, but TN has no state income tax. Here in Georgia where I've lived since 2004 we do have a state income tax and in the locality where I live now sales tax totals 6% state plus local (much less on food, local only I think, some things that are sales taxed back in no-income-tax Tennessee are not here in Georgia, like labor.)

The cheapest I could find for the UK was around EUR 61 as well..

For the US the cheapest I could find was B&H at US$ 54,95 while the Amazon Kodak store sells it for US$ 59,48 which is pretty much the same in EUR at the current exchange rate.

-) I forgot that in the USA now at online sales taxes are claimed too (though I recently discussed this...) which to me is a good thing as it at least concerning sales taxes kind of levels out the discrepancy between online and local retail.

That’s just one of many things I don’t miss about living there. Here in Montana, no sales tax, no vehicle inspections, permanent vehicle registration after 10 years, and no traffic. Of course, I do have to buy photographic stuff online since little is available here. However, Photographer’s Formulary is just down the road In Condon.

Beside that the tax discussion is a bit off-topic:
I lived a year in Denmark. 25% VAT, high taxes on income. Free education from daycare to university (and students get financial support independent of the parent's income), free health care, great infrastructure. You get what you pay for... I prefer everyone pays a bit for the greater good then only the rich can afford a good service (be it education, health care, transport, stable electric grid and whatever).

Now I live in the part of North America with the highest sales tax, in Quebec. People complain it is high, but with 14.975% (5% federal + 9.975% provincial) I actually call it low. It has also the lowest university fees in North America, and even though there is a lot to improve in the health system, it is at least accessible to everyone who needs it. It is somehow midway in between (nearly) nothing as in parts of the US and the rates in European countries (17% in Luxembourg to 27% in Hungary). Still, in the three different European countries I lived in I never had black outs, which seem to be a very normal thing in all parts of North America...

Now, let's discuss tipping in North America vs elsewhere...

That can be true but we have a very low overhead in the state so the tax burden is low here. Not to mention that property is relatively affordable.

I'm willing to pay the CA fee in order to have such an abundance of photographic subjects, the art community and the services to support it.

Sure. But places with less government will need to take less. California has far more government than I could ever stand.

However if one is in California and has a heart attack or stroke, help will arrive quickly and it will not be your last one. There are other beautiful areas of the country where the taxes are less, the government is smaller and less influential and your first heart attack or stroke will be your last and your consumer protections are not to be found. One tends to get what they pay for.

No, that just means that your tax rate is much higher. But that has nothing to do with the price of film.

It has. People state retail prices and then other people compare these to their local prices. If one then neglects VAT a distorted view exists.
But this depends on what one defines as "price".

Of course the situation is more complex. Manufacturers adapt their basic prices to the econimic situtation a their market, to keept their position there. At least they did when re-importing and similar was not as eaysy as today.
