Earlier generations of photographers learned the technology and associated terminology from print media - books and magazines. Today's online introduction and discussion of new developments in photography is a crowd sourced jumbled mess. And there doesn't seem to be any way out of it.

Discussions like this one about "100% crop" are merely humorous, because nobody is harmed. But there are times in real life when confusion about terminology can have serious consequences.
