What Happened to ID-11 Plus?

I was digging in my shop and came across a couple of envelopes of Ilford ID-11 Plus. I seem to remember that I was quite fond of it at one time, but it is no longer be available. It is almost impossible to find anything about it on the net.

Is the formula available and can it be made by adding a chemical (or two) to the current ID-11? What about developing times/charts?

I believe ID-11 Plus was essentially D-76 with a chelating agent known as 4BZ (IIRC), to prevent secondary physical development and thereby improving acutance. I do remember the 4BZ was in a class of chemicals known as thiols or mercaptans. I'm pretty sure the patent has expired by now so maybe a search will turn up the mystery additive. That's all I know from the top of my head-

Ilford gave it up and reverted to plain ID11. I can`t remember why.

I would not use packaged chemicals more than 2 years old.

Well, it turns out that the mystery ingredient was Cinnamic Acid Disulfide. I had run across an MSDS sheet that listed that in, typical devious fashion, as 1-5%, but did not know if that was really it at the time. The following Dead Link Removed will explain it all. Ilford gave it up and reverted to plain ID11. I can`t remember why.

I would not use packaged chemicals more than 2 years old.

Powdered chemicals should last longer than that in their package. Heck, many liquids last that long.

ID-11 'plus' has been gone for a long time, maybe 25 years? so it's probable the contents have oxidized by now. Mix it up and if it's colored brown, throw it away. The real problem will be when you try it and find out that it's the 'magic bullet', and you can't get any more.
