What goes best with Rodinal?

I'm about to get back into processing my own films and wondered whether anyone has any views on preferred stops or fixers to go with Rodinal?

I use plain water as a stop, and Ilford Rapid Fixer. I also pre-soak the film for five minutes.

Water stop for dev times greater than 5 minutes.

Six (6) fill and dumps or Ilford method,- tap or, if you have @$#%ed water, distilled, since you need so little each time for relatively few rolls. TF-4 to fix... water final wash, Ilford method again, tap or distilled followed by Photo -Flo in distilled; fool proof, high quality and cheap, especially if you have a Walmart or similar nearby for distilled!

I keep empty distilled jugs filled with clean tap for washes in my darkroom beside the distilled and mixed chemicals so they are already at the same temperature when I need to work.

The fixer you use makes no difference with Rodinal, or most other developers. The only ones it matters wth are Pyro developers (eg. PMK), because they need an alkaline fixer for maximum stain formation.

Speaking of the obvious, but "What goes best with Rodinal?" is a film like APX 100 or Tmax 100, the combinations are excellent.

APX100 & Rodinal are made for each other, superb fine grain, sharpness, tonality & no loss of film speed. Tmax 100 is just as good except the true film speed is 50EI.

Why do so many recommend a water stop? Would it be harmful to use regular Kodak stop bath with this developer?

Because, unlike with prints where a number pass through a tray of stop-bath, water does an effective job with film. Of course there's no reason at all why you can't use a conventional stop-bath, it makes little difference.

That depends on your fixer, if you use an alkaline fixer because you sometimes use other developers like a staining developer where you want the fixer alkaline, then using an acid stop is not helpful.

Just use fairly fresh fixer. The reason I warn you is just that Agfa no longer exists so you may have old Agefix. I think somebody else now makes it. There are ways to check if the fixer is expired.

Totally untrue. Ilford Rapid Fxer/Hypam will work fine with Pyrocat and have no effect on the stain. The pH is 5-5.5 which is often classed as a Neutral fixer. By comparison some Acid fixers have a pH of 3'ish.
