My camera lust

Thankful for the film resurgence going on, yet, prices for high-end SLRs continue to drop. I just got this EOS-1V body for $250 from a guy in Japan in MINT condition! And just for good measure, I also found an EOS-1N in mint condition for $99 too!

I had a Nikon F5 years ago, but hated the fact that you were stuck with that bottom grip to house the EIGHT AA batteries! That was a serious brick to carry around. I use my EOS cameras with no battery grip and the standard 2CR5 battery and they're not so large. I think Canon got the design right with those!

Nothing now. I was not really thinking about buying any camera equipment or lens and I received an email from KEH that I could get a 20% discount on one purchase if I took their survey about the new website design. I took the survey and got the code word. I looked at KEH and found that there was a Hasselblad lens which I did not have ==> the Hasselblad f/8 C 500mm lens. Now I have the lens, and the leather lens case. With the lens and the 2X extender I have a 1,000mm MF lens which is equivalent to a 625mm lens for a 35mm camera.

Back to having no camera of lens desires. I am back to living a GAS free life.

Yeah I recently picked up a nice condition Nikon F100 with 35-105 zoom for $170 incl shipping., the F100 was originally $2000 equivalent in 2015 dollars for just the body alone.

Just to satisfy my curiosity, I'd like to take a spin with a DS M3. All the hype and accolades from the fanboys (and actual Leica shooters) have piqued my interest. Not that I need one, what with a pair of M6s in my arsenal, but if a body came along at the right price...

I have wished for years that I could find a 5x12 Korona and a couple of holders. Nearing 90, the 7x17 is getting a little heavy and bulky for me.
Nearing 90! And I keep hearing the youngsters grouse about DSLRs being SO heavy! I enjoy my relatively miniature Linhof 617s.(7x17!@90!).You're a better man than I.

The distinctive Maxxum 7000 was the pioneer.

The Wikipedia article for it is interesting and it also has a side-by-side photo of the Maxxum 7000 and Maxxum 7 - I didn't realize the size difference.

Even Ken Rockwell reviews it.

Maybe I can save you some money. I have two M3's - a DS and SS, both with self timer and preview levers. I also have an M6 and an M6 TTL. The M3's have more heft and feel a bit more solid, but the M6 is the smoother camera to operate. It is more refined.

Heresy, I know. Just my opinion.

Nikon FM3A. If I have to explain you may not understand.

Mine is black; bought it new when they first came out. I use it with the 55/2.8 AIS Micro-Nikkor. A solid, beautiful, well-featured camera, mechanical with just the right amount of automation if you want it. Beautiful viewfinder display.

I said in another thread that due to eyesight issues (vision is just getting worse as I get closer to 50) that I couldn't use a manual SLR anymore. But I've been missing using my ancient first gen Nikon F2 I've had in my closet for ten years now. Today, a friend gifted me another F2, a really nice F2A from 1977 with an AI 50/1.4 lens. So I'm going to give it a try. Maybe I can add diopters to it, but maybe the split screen focusing isn't as hard even with worsening eyesight?

It's not that I've been lusting for this camera, but I've been lusting for a camera that doesn't require POWER. If modern cameras have made me hate anything, it's hating making sure I always had charged batteries! Grrr! A totally mechanical SLR makes other photogs green with envy when you're trekking in places like Yosemite and Yellowstone

I would like to use a Mamiya Six (new one and folder) for a while.

But most of all I would like to get me a decent 5x7" field camera. I like this format for contact printing and would like to make Calotypes and salt prints with paper negatives.

Something like that would be nice, yes. But I can't afford spending $3.000 on a new camera.
So it will probably be a used one - maybe even traded for some other photo gear?

I want an M body and the 50mm APO Summicron so that I can say with authority that lens sharpness doesn't matter.

I have not bought a camera since 2009. Before this last purchase it has been at least four years since I bought a lens.

With Hasselblad et al., having a nice supply of backs is like gold. For exposure control, I suppose many people want three A12 backs at least.

There was a 70mm back for sale here recently and someone mentioned 70mm film is still available, though I don't know enough about it.

I have two Hasselblad [503 CX and 903 SWC] and only 5 film backs. 70mm film is too limited in availability.

In the coming year, as my finances recover from a divorce, I plan to replace my creaky problem-laden Technika III with some kind of new 4x5 field camera but I'm not THAT picky. I don't need a high end Ebony etc. Tachihara, Shen-Hao or Chamonix all fit my needs. I'll get one of those, most likely.

I really want/lust after a Rolleiflex. I really like and enjoy using my Yaschicmat 124. In fact it's probably the single most "fun to use" camera I have. I like TLRs and I'd like to have the best.

I lust after a lens, the not-that-expensive so I'll-probably-get-one 80/1.9 for my Mamiya 645 Pro.

I'd kind of like to have any good quality system 35mm autofocus camera body and a couple of good lenses. All my 35mm cameras are manual focus (well except for the little Olympus Stylus Zoom.)

Mamiya 7 is certainly lust-worthy but I certainly WON'T buy one, barring a lottery win. They just aren't worth the price to me.

RZ67 or RB67 is something I fight the temptation to get because I think it would greatly reduce the amount of 4x5 shooting a do. But I enjoy large format. And a decent 4x5 kit can be packed that's considerably lighter and smaller than a comparable RZ/RB kit!

I'd like to have a Speed or Crown (Speed preferred for lens versatility) Graphic with working and "properly cammed for the lens it has" rangefinder. I got a Travelwide and look forward to using it but 90mm on 4x5 is kind of specialized. Something like the 127 or 135 on many Graphics would be better, and they work with Graphmatics which I have. An old flash unit and some bulbs and I'd be set up to play Weegee, or perhaps Jimmy Olson.

I spent 40-odd years lusting after a Spotmatic which I now have. Can't say I lust after any camera now although I shall certainly buy more when I see ones that interest me.

The ones I mentioned above I lust after to use.

Some I think are just so incredibly cool they'd be nice to have. Some of the Exactas are in that category to me. They just look awesome, sort of steampunkish from a time way before that was a thing.

Go for the Rolleiflex 2.8 (or 3.5) E model. If you're used to shooting all manual all mechanical cameras, they'll fit like a glove. And an E in decent working order isn't that big of an ask either - both of mine were purchased for under $600. The one needed an overhaul, which was a little pricey at $400, but now that it's done, it's like butter - focusing and setting shutter/aperture are silky smooth, focusing is dead accurate, and exposures are dead on what I set them to (no accounting for user error). The other one was perfectly fine for a couple years before it too needed servicing, but like the first one, now that it's serviced, it's nothing but a joy to use. And they can take heavy use too - I just put 70-ish rolls through one of mine on my Italy trip.

Wehman 8x10 with Fuji 125mm, 210mm and 420mm lenses. Stupid because I can no longer afford any of it, including 8x10 film (employment issues, not so much the rising price of film.)

Man's got to have a dream, though: right?
