What ASA is Tri-X Pan

I came across an film 16 sheet pack of TRI-X pan. What ASA was this film? I remember from back in the day it was NOT 400 like it is now. This was the kind in the yellow & green pack.

I have some really expired stuff that shoots at 160 but thats due to age.

Probably 320 when it was new.

As far as I recall and that is way back into the early 60's (1961/2 the speed was always 400. The film that was also available alongside
Tri X at the time was XX Pan and that was 320. Awful stuff, no contrast and grain that you could almost feel. But as an impoverished student it was all I could afford.

If this is a 523 Film Pack, it is not really sheet film. Those were available in 16 shot packs.

The film did not change but they way they rated film did. In 1960 all film speeds doubled including Tri-X. Again the film did not change but the rating did. Kodak Tri-X went from 200 to 400 overnight.

My oldest Kodak Darkroom Dataguide (copyright 1958) shows Tri-X pack film at 200 speed, but there is a side note that this includes a safety margin to avoid underexposure, and it can be doubled if your exposure is accurate.

As brianquinn indicated, Kodak decided to remove the safety margin from their ratings, thus the apparent doubling of the speed.
