Well, I've only lived here for about 6 months (and my car is still wearing a PA license plate), so I can't say I've got any knowledge of him or his books. I've always stuck to fiction except for photography books.

Reading down under is hilarious for an aussie, but I'm sure it's just as funny to the rest of you. A short history of nearly everything should be required reading in every school.

So between South Australia, the UK, and the US, we've got the warmest january on record, the UK has the wettest, and the US simultaneously has coldest and driest between northeast and southwest?

The UK has compromised the water runoff and built on flood plain.
The last century was wet in historical timescale for Aus and Ca.
The UK needs to address its delinquencies. The other two need to use less water.
When the UK rail system was not profitable they lifted lots of track some of the track was dual so they went to single! Some has been converted back again too much traffic for single.
So not optimistic on what will happen next to avoid future years problems.

Well, the temp here has steadily dropped since I got up this morning. It was =8f at 5:30, its now -14f. It's supposed to climb to mid 20's by this afternoon though. Then we get hit with the next round of ice and snow for the next several days.

8C here this am under partly cloudy skies; forecast is for light showers, beginning late this pm and lasting through the weekend. Looks like the nod will go to the F5 or F6 (well-sealed against moisture). Not great weather for the E100G (what I wouldn't give for some Provia 400), so HP5+ will get the nod (a 200 EI or 1000 EI rating, depending on the cloud cover).

Question for American Northerners

I have a question best answerable for those who know best. I want to know if the following complaint is common pertaining to being out in the snow. Here at the NC/SC line there is close to a foot of snow right now, which is atypical. Our snows are usually a lot less.
Anyway, my feet and legs seem very tired--I am tired. And I want to know if it is common when you're out in the snow, doing things like trudging around, carrying firewood, putting weights in the back of a pickup--those sorts of things. Heck, I bet I didn't spend more than 2 hours total today doing these sorts of things. But with big heavy Timberland boots on and having to lift your feet up high for every step, and then having every step slide back,--it just sees you can wear yourself out quick doing that. Or am I just having a "tired day" unrelated to all that trudging in the deep snow? (I'm way out in the country)
Normally I can split a load a pickup load of wood and not be this worn out.

Yep, that's enough to tire me out fairly quickly, even wearing shorts and thongs without snow.
To be fair, last time I was in real snow I also got tired from walking, but that was in the Austrian Alps over winter, and those ski-boots were heavy (but after 3 months skiing I got fairly fit enough)

It is having to constantly glance over one's shoulder to keep an eye out for wolves that tires you out! The cold will tire you out, too -- takes more energy to keep the body temperature up.

And as one who has not grown up with snow (saw my first snowfall at 14 yrs old), being surrounded by snow, I can not help but think back to school, reading One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich. Working in the snow makes for a pretty long day (but I really haven not done too much of it, wimp that I am).

But the coldest day of work I remember was here on the spit between Humboldt Bay and the Pacific Ocean. We were transplanting planting native beach grasses on the dunes. Air temp was in the lower 40's, perhaps upper 30's, but with a strong constant wind off the ocean. The wind-chill factor was huge, and the wind cut thru what we wore. We felt no warmth from the sun.

More rain this evening! Looks like we are in for a nice long spell of wet weather, at least in far northwestern CA.

Had to park away from normal slot when I got back friendly local tree had preempted it.

Today 39.8mm of rain and counting.
Tomorrow 23C and more rain again.

Snowing incessantly, again. Fueled up my snow blower and cleared sidewalks for self and a couple octogenarian neighbors. Hope it clears up for my weekend getaway, heading out with my sweetie tomorrow morning and won't be home till Monday night(maybe).

Average rainfall for Adelaide in January, February, and March combined is 60mm.
We just had 75mm in the Dead Link Removed, maybe as much again in the next 24.
Took me 1.5 hours to drive 14km to work, normally do it in 20-30 mins.
