Waterproof Camera Covers

Hi all,

As we have been having such wonderful summer weather :rolleyes: I have been thinking of investing in a waterproof cover for my camera(s). Ideally I would want something that will do both 35mm SLR and my Mamiya M645.

Has anyone used these covers? Are they worth it?

No experience whatsoever, but living in Ireland you're in a good place to test such things!!!

From the those that I have looked at the Storm Jacket seems to have most versatility/flexibility for use with 35mm and MF kit. I have seen some on Eb*y where the the back is opaque so as to make possible to use view finder. This I think is the one issue with the Storm jacket as it appears you have to open the back to use the view finder, which therefore exposes the camera to the weather you are trying to protect it from.

And then you found the Shutter Hat for me, which seems to address that very issue as it appears to have a window for a view finder. I found what appears to be the manufacturers home page Dead Link Removed and they have some better product shots. My only remaining concern is their statement "Perfect for light rain protection and spontaneous shooting.", we have been having slightly more than light rain recently, and the weather is changing so rapidly it's easy to get caught in a downpour. Here's hoping we don't need the cover this Saturday!

Kata Covers

Have a look at these. I got one and it fits my Nikon SLR/DSLR and a 80-200 F2.8. Haven't tried it with my 'Blad but I think there is lots of room.
I was out shooting the start of the Swiftsure (local major yachting race) and it was blowing 25 knots, I was in a 16 foot boat, we were taking signicant water over the bow and the camera stayed perfectly dry. Easy to use.

I use the shower caps that you can nick from any good hotel room. I take the cap off the camera once the decent light emerges.

I didn't buy a cover in the end, but one of the people on our Tour in August gave me a present of what she uses...... a shower cap from the hotel bathroom. It actually works a treat for keeping light rain off, naturally it's not much use if you want to shoot while it's raining but it does work fine for protecting a camera while walking around!
