You'll have to forgive my skepticism...but...despite political correctness of 2006 posturing, water will continue to flow towards money. I find it telling that 100 years ago those theives at least purchased the surrounding area from the locals to obtain the water rights for Los Angeles. It seems Las Vegas isn't going to bother with that 100 years later. They will simply "take" the water from Nye county where I live.

Even here in NW Montana in the Mountains, with all the posturing and such and the new influx of people, there are quite a few water wars going on..

An old saying goes: In the West a man can be shot for taking an empty bucket to a river.

You would be surprised even in the 21st century, how close to the truth that is! I own the oldest water rights on the particular mountain I live on and we had a new family move above us and started diverting water from the creek for a pond, which was in violation of the water rights, when I went up to talk to the new owner about it, he confronted me with a pistol!, it took a court order for him to understand the way water rights work!

Forget about Canada...our water has too many beavers and tastes really grim...continue fighting each other...leave us alone...look to the oceans for your answers...we look just like you, so invading will not work...

Water is such a big part of the history here.

The article mentions Mullholland--a big name in Southern California history/power.

In building the aqueduct, they needed healthcare for the workers. Since there wasn't anything along the path of the aqueduct, they formed their own system--Kaiser, the first HMO.

There was a leak at one time that let water flow through the Owens River gorge for a while. It did so for long enough that a stream ecology reformed. When they tried to shut down the water, it was this ecology that forced them to keep the water flowing.

And, didn't the guy who started Mammoth Mountain ski resort start out as a hydrologist for the state?

All sorts of odd stories.

Also, one of the most beautiful areas I have ever been to.

From wikipedia about the bombing of the LA aqueduct in 1924,
Mulholland was quoted as saying he "half-regretted the demise of so many of the valleyÂ’s orchard trees, because now there were no longer enough trees to hang all the troublemakers who live there."

Murrary, all we have left are boy and girls scouts to use if we decide on any "new" actions.

If we nuke the polar cap, would water run down hill through Canada to us?

Owens Valley

After years of litigation, LA has let water flow again in the valley for the first time since 1913.

Let's see some of the California artists get out there and document some of this!

Hi all, I am new to this forum but shoot the So. Cal desert. Just got back from Mt. Whitney. Anyway will be heading back up there in a few weeks after the habitats settle in.

Thought it was tacky that the flood gates were opened by the photo-op hungry mayor of Los Angeles, kind of like throwing salt in the wound.

The movie "Chinatown" written by Robert Towne and staring Jack Nicholson was about the Owens Valley. In the story Mulholland was changed to Mulray (sp?)

Boy and girl scouts? Phew! I thought you guys would unleash a cane weilding hoard of wal-mart greeters our way. (Shudder)

Please don't nuke the polar ice cap...Santa has a vindictive streak proportional to his generousity.

Quick thought: Was William Mulholland as much to blame as Fred Eaton?

Both were insensitive to the Owens Valley but I see Eaton as twice the villain that Mulholland was. Purchasing land and then witholding it trying to exact rediculous prices for his own gain. Ultimately the St. Francis dam disaster was his fault I believe.

JG: Yeah I agree with you. I did Mulholland for a sample lesson plan, and he didn't seem like that bad of a guy. Some of his cronies however...
