Thank you, I didn't realize there was more than one type. I think I just need the "Universal" type? I don't necessarily plan to be shooting with flash.

The lens I'm trying to integrate has these measurements:

estimated focal length: 210mm
diameter of glasses: 65mm
estimated aperture: f3.2
total length: 150mm
diameter at mounting thread: 81mm
outter diameter of flange: 107mm

So I'm assuming the 81 mm diameter necessitates an Ilex #5 Universal. But do I also have to take maximum aperture into account? At 210mm/f 3.2 I get an estimated max aperture of 65 mm.

I see a serviced Ilex #5 Universal integrated into a Kodak lens here for $589:

So my budget right now is anything less than $589, unless unmounting the shutter from the Kodak lens would cost extra money from whomever I hire to remount my lens.

Just now, Googling brought me to this page, which describes a Compound #5 as having a larger maximum aperture than the Ilex, but it sounds like it's pretty rare.

Thanks for your interest.

Which camera will this beast be mounted on? The specifications you list seem huge for a 210mm lens, but it does have a large maximum aperture.

I may have missed another thread where you answer this, but what is your goal? Are you after a certain "look" that emulates another photographer? Are you after a certain quality of bokeh?

I recently went through some madness myself trying to get a budget minded 600mm solution for 8x10. I got there doing my own (mild) machining and using a Packard #6 shutter.

If you look into what people have done to get the Kodak Aero-ektar 178mm f2.5 mounted, it may give you some insight as to what you're up against. I believe the Aero-ektar has a much larger front cell/group than the size at the shutter mount, so it may be an odd example.

Good luck.

It is a beast. A Petzval barrel lens— that’s the look I’m going for. Thanks for weighing in, I’ll check that out.

The shutter I have is a black #5 universal, the iris opening is 2.525" and the lens opening thread is 2.988"-30.
The overall width of the shutter is 5.20" Where do you need the shutter shipped. Feel free to contact me using the start conversation link.

Are you planing to front mount to the shutter or have the lens cells mounted in front and behind?
Packards are great but your fastest shutter speed will be 25th to 30th second max.

Thanks for writing, lecarp. I'm waiting for the lens to arrive: then I need to figure out if it's even possible for (relatively inexperienced) me to determine whether the Ilex #5 is large enough to fit the lens, or if I need a Compound #5. I think it's going to be a tight squeeze, and I haven't determined via Google search exactly where I need to measure lens diameter.

(By the way, I assume it's an Ilex #5 you have, not the Compound, because you mentioned Universal?).

I'd prefer to have an expert determine which shutter fits, so I don't end up buying a shutter I won't be able to use, but I don't know how to find an expert to examine the shutter in person rather than by shipping the lens in a box. Does that make sense?

If an Ilex #5 won't work, there's a $550 lens on eBay that—if it sticks around long enough—I could buy for the Compound shutter.

I was hoping to have S. K. Grimes, or the fellow behind http://lensn2shutter.com, mount the shutter in between the lens cells. I live in California.

Thanks!

My go to shop for stuff like this is Tempe Camera Repair in Tempe AZ. They have a machine shop and camera repair shop and have manufactured custom solutions for odd size lenses and shutters for me before (opposite problem though, very tiny lenses and shutters) Good work, very quick and inexpensive.

Although you may be able to find a place locally, or at least closer, through a google maps search. California has quite a few camera repair shops; more than most other places because of the population and the movie business.

I have a Ilex #5 Universal with a Paragon lens in it. Of course you would not want the flanges for the Paragon. It works very well even with flash. I'm in California. In case you would like a 24 inch red dot goerz artar......not in a shutter but pristine.

Hi Hap, Thanks for replying. How much would it be with the Paragon inside?

Hi
Give me a bit of time to check with the shutter and Paragon. I'll get back to you shortly. You would want the flanges for the Paragon. right now it's mounted to a wooden board. No inclination for my 24in red dot goerz artar?

It's really only the shutter I'm interested in, which is kind of a waste, I know, but I haven't had any luck getting a shutter without a lens. In an alternate reality of infinite money I would definitely be interested in your Artar, but I've already overextended myself with the Petzval lenses!

I'll make a very good deal for the ilex and the paragon.....that is if you are still in the market.
