The focusing ring is not turning smoothly. A slight abrasion on rotation. I'm travelling with it in a couple of weeks but the local repair guy here seems to be away (Chinese New Year time..)
Any suggestions?

Patience, wait for your guy to return.
Cleaning & lubrication isn't a very good project for a first time repair project.
The problem is likely a small bit of grit in the threads.

Bring another lens for your trip if you have one. Otherwise, what choice do you have? A different camera, perhaps?
I wouldn't use the lens if there is a malfunction.

This lens and the 35mm version both have a very tricky focusing double helical that you need to mark very carefully if you take it apart. If you assemble it incorrectly it may go together but your focusing would be off. Its most likely a bit if dirt or piece of sand that's causing it.

Here is a link with nice pictures of it being disassembled step by step.

Loosen all the screws on the mounting flange and re tighten them gradually and opposite to opposite. Notchy focusing on these lenses is often when the flange is not centred and binds with the focus helicoid. The flange can go out of alignment by the twisting of taking it off and putting it on the camera.
