Vivitar 283 vs. Nikon 5100

Anyone here know if firing a Vivitar 283 via the pc socket on the D5100 will fry the camera's circuitry?

I got one of those Safe sync things from B&H awhile back when I started to use not only my 283 with my digital camera but also the old potato mashers of old. Nothing like showing up to the kiddie gymnastics debut (think 5 year olds) with a Metz 60 hung on the old Nikon D60!! I certainly got a few good stares with that setup, particularly from the "hip" crowd with their pretty new digital cameras that they had no idea how to setup and use properly!! Pop up flash......I want to be different!!

I believe Wein makes the safe sync. Good device to have for any camera, I am finding I put it on the older film Nikons I have laying around too, even thought they can handle the higher voltage. If figure less stress is less stress on these older cameras and certainly who wants to ruin a perfectly good DSLR.

it might. the trigger voltage of the vivitar283is relatively high. use a wireless remote trigger to be sure

don't do it too much. get a wireless trigger. the 283 trigger voltage is surprisingly high(~27V) .don't risk it!

I shoot my 283 all the time with digital. I just use it off camera with a radio trigger. Mine certainly has a high enough trigger voltage to potentially cause problems on digital.

SOME versions (later model) 283 "reportedly" work fine, but not worth the risk. I use several for setups but they are fired by a peanut (optical), or by radio trigger...not by wire or by camera.
