And, my dear Sirius Locust friend, how do you reconcile Decisive Moments with ideas?

(And did you know that people say "there are many other examples" when they mean "for the life of me, i can't think of any"?)

My contention has been that whether I have a camera or not, I am still looking at things as if I am poised to snap a shot. I perceive everything from the perspective of the camera ie, I am looking at how light and shadow react with each other. I figure f-stop and shutter speed, am I going to need a flash or what angle is going to be better. If I want to photograph a scene that means that I have seen it in detail and have a desire to capture it. I can appreciate the desire to just enjoy the moment and I think it is commendable it is just that I have a different way to enjoy a sunrise/set or what ever.

I can think of little else more frustrating than being somewhere for the first (or any other) time and missing a shot that I wish I'd been able to capture. I also sympathise with those who become frustrated with hordes of tourists wandering around shooting the most inane subjects almost as a reflex (no pun intended) action. Working adjacent to The Tower of London makes for fascinating lunchtimes.....

However, where I go, a camera comes with me - usually my F1-N, a 20-35mm f3.5 L, 50mm f1.4 and 85mm f1.8. Many days they stay in the bag but they do get used regularly and I generally get the shots I want.

My experience is that the best images usually get shot the first time you visit a location, I do re-work locations though as the light and vegetation etc change which is something my wife can't understand

I often see things when I am out without a camera and wish that I had one so I certainly would not go out looking for photographic opportunities without a camera.

If you had had children, you would have seen Decisive Moments that are never repeated. If you attend sporting events, on occasion Decisive Moments occur.

You completely missed the meaning of "Grasshopper", it is a direct reference to an old television series.

Steve, i hate to have to say this, but you really should try to draw up that psychological profile of that guy calling himself Sirius Glass.
What makes him think that someone missed the Grasshopper reference because he missed the reference to a plague of biblical proportions?
(And yes, if you ask nicely, i can be persuaded to explain what that all means. )

You got it wrong, again. Calling one "Grasshopper" was done in a long running television series. By addressing you directly as "Grasshopper" and using it as it was done several times on every show, I was made a direct reference to that show. If I had called you a plague, then I would have been making a biblical reference.

people and places change ...

it works best to learn how to read a subject
on the spot if you want to photograph it.
it takes practice to photograph a place or person that way.
it involves being a good listener and having a trained eye.
