Vintage/old tripods for V system that will still work well?

You can put an ArcaSwiss clamp onto a Tiltall. Now it's a modern tripod

Also what I did, replaced the Bogen "hex" QR I originally installed on my Tiltall with a generic ARCA screw-type clamp. Have fitted nearly all my cameras with plates. BTW, if this is the route you go it's a good idea to leave a generic camera plate clamped into the QR at all times so that if you use a camera w/o plate you don't have to remove the clamp to use the camera on your tripod.

I still use a Bogen hex plate QR adaptor on my Tiltall–adds a half pound to the weight, but is fine otherwise.

Good idea about leaving a generic plate in the AS clamp on the tripod. But ALL the AS plates that I have and have seen, require a hex key/allen wrench to secure the plate to the camera. So not that easy to do. I would love to find a plate with a thumb screw. Time to go eBay shopping.

One good thing about the Bogen/Manfrotto hex plate system, is that it auto locks when you put the plate in. So no fumbling to secure the camera down.

These screws can also be retrofitted to most custom plates but the custom plates for one camera can stay on camera.

Arca clamps can be snap-lock or screw lock, I prefer the screw lock clamps since there will be occasions when a brand X plate will not lock up completely in a brand Y clamp. But if you stay within a brand you should be good.

As far as the Bogen I moved away from the Bogen system, once in a while it only pretends to lock. And this can drop a camera, I have also run into counterfeit hex plates which the clamps will not safely and securely grab.
