I'm wondering what is a good hair day? Is that where the hair stays out of the film holders, your eyes and from between your teeth?

P.S I have no affiliation with Emulsion and am a bit tired of hearing the gripes about VC magazine from folks who continue to buy it, and I am having a bad day and will most likely apologize for the tone of this post later.

Mark, I do intend to subscribe to Emulsion and I just bought 100 sheets of Delta 100 from Freestyle. And yes, you most certainly are having a bad hair day...however the location of the hair may be open to speculation...at least by me ;-)

What view camera does to them and the articles they write or are written about them is a waste of space. You have your opinion and I have mine. I vote with my Wallet. I just wish those who constantly complain about the magazine would do that too.
 
While I've contributed extensively to discussions of VC elsewhere, and have even offered editorial advice, I'll just say, "No comment" here. :cool:
 
We have been told by readers everyday that this issue is a collector's item. There will always be flaws in everything everybody does. As for a waste of paper if you think looking at images by Paul Caponigro and Tillman Crane (who also discusses the 5x12format), seeing darkroom work by Ron Rosenstock and Steve Sherman, reading about Charles Cramer's digital workflow, having a great second part to an article on Speed Graphic cameras (part one is in the Jan/Feb issue and this is the most extensive summary of these cameras published in any magazine), seeing another installment on Kerry Thalmann's series on working in the field, and seeing the work of lesser known photographers such as Tony DeBone and James Lattanzio is a waste of paper then so be it.

When I first got back into LF and began purchasing VC magazine I too took issue with the editorial sloppyness. Steve and I traded a few barbs and life went on. Things have gotten better over time however. We all have warts and I find the cost / benefit relationship on the plus side when evaluating VC magazine. I still buy it, whince at the mistakes but gobble up all the great info presented in it.

Besides APUG, Lenswork and Black and White Photography there is no other place I know of that provides me as much useful information as VC. And you know what the speilling here can be terrible too LOL. My own included.
 
I found this issue to be one of the best ever. The "mixed bag" issues are always my favorite and this one has a great range of articles and portfolios.

I would also agree with Steve that Paul Caponigro is one of the great living photographers.

The only thing I found lacking was Ron Wisner's article on ULF lenses. While it was informative, I think it would have been nice to mention specific lenses in the piece instead of just saying that the lenses are basically process Artars, Ronars etc.
 
Just in case this is some kind of poll or someone's keeping tab here, I bought into VC on issue #1 and own every issue since.

So, put me down as pro VC/Simmon's camp.
 
I havent read this entire thread.... I merely was going to start a thread on VC and saw this one so I will add my comments in here.

This 100th issue was my first issue to receive as a new subscriber. I have read it for well over the last two years and it has been a hit or miss mag for me. This issue is a full on HIT though. I love the images of Tillman crane (hes one of my personal favorites and one of the few photographers I truly admire) and the Paul Capinagro images are astoundingly gorgeous as well. I was pleased with the articles and found them well written and informative. I think steve and co did well with this 100th issue.
Im in the business of creating magazines. Im the art director to be specific. One thing I found very bothersome is the little/minor editorial errors in grammar, punctuation, etc etc. I know that EVERY magazine of every size has these. But VC seems to consistantly have them. Im not an editor, but I know that an unwritten rule as the art director for the magazine I work on that I read, reread, and then reread again the spreads I send to my editor for editing and proofing I try and fix all of these sorts of errors as best as possible. This only minimizes the misses on the managing editors proofing step and the seceding iterations that occur after that.
now I will openly admit that Im likely overly picky or critical because I myself also do magazine work so I am constantly able to enjoy magazines but not without looking through them with a critical (sometimes overcritical) eye. just a thought that it could be something worth trying to work on..... that suggestion can be taken to heart or cast aside....

the thing Im most grateful for is that View Camera is still out there and going strong for another 100 issues I hope.
 
VC Magazine

I t should be said here that this is a small enough group we have here and all endeavors need to be supported. Mark;et. al; I don't know how long you've been doing LF but it's been 30 years for me. VC mag. and Photo-techniques have been as good a companion as any "how to" book out there. It's hard enough to put out a bi-monthly mag. Yeah-nobody's perfect-why don't YOU start publishing your own RAG? Then we can chop you up a little. Most people don't even stick with LF for more than a couple of years. Too much bother they say. Mr. Simmons has somehow managed to put out a 100 issues. If you start to look between the cracks you might actually learn something. I know I have.

I subscribe and have had to contact them every time a new issue comes out to tell them that they have not sent my magazine out to me. If the Jan./Feb. issue was part 1 of the article on Speed Graphics then I am missing the current issue again. Steve, if you are reading this I'll be emailing you again about my magazine, but look on the bright side - there's only 2 more issues to go until my subscription runs out and then you won't hear from me any more.

We have explained everytime that it takes longer to get into Canada. You can thank the Canadian postal system for this. Just relax, it is coming.

I've read many issues of VC. The content (and heaven help us, the writing and layout and errors) seem to go from ok to this issue (sub-par). What happened? It's a shame that Paul Caponigro had to be in this issue -- seriously, wouldn't a grocery store paper bag be a "collector's item" too, with his images?

Maybe VC would be better as a quarterly. More time could be put into presentation.
