Pretty depressing that he thinks everything he's done over the past 70 years was "a waste of time". Understandable, though.

No one knows how their life affected others and changed history. A leader could have seen one of his war pictures and decided to try negotiations once more rather than send the Marines.

Moderator hat on:
Yes, we know that Don McCullin worked in a photographic field where the subject is intensely political.
But discussions about those political subjects, rather than the photography of them, need to be elsewhere.

Not sure this is political, rather ethical.

Most war photographers (capable of mobilising the slightest amount of empathy) ends up with PTSD and/or other mental disorders.
I certainly understand that those photos may haunt him in his retirement.

"Our leader" isn't political?

No, it is descriptive, not a value-based judgement (which could be considered as a political statement).

Aside from being a stellar photojournalist , DM clearly understands our situation. If you haven't read his autobiography, "Unreasonable Behavior," you should give it a go. I heard him speak at the International Center of Photography some years ago, and felt honored to be there.

His landscapes are spectacular was well. I recently tried to buy his book on Palmyra, "Southern Frontiers: A Journey Across the Roman Empire," but at $1300.00 I had to give it a pass.
