Any legal experts out there?
I am thinking of publishing a book using Blurb, or Lulu, or something like that. And I would like to include song lyrics to accompany the photographs. Here's the question: Do I need to get permission to use someone else's song lyrics? Silly question, huh? I'm sure I do. Does anyone have any experience in this area, and can give me a push in the right direction?
The book will be primarily given as gifts, but it will be offered for sale as well, of course.
Any advice would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Steve

Yes, you need permission from the copyright holder. In the UK it's relatively straightforward: contact the rights department of a publisher who has already published the work: they will tell you who is the copyright holder (or their agent). Then contact the copyright holder / agent, pay the fee, and Bob's your uncle.

Music publishers are notoriously aggressive in defending their copyright. Even when such rights probably do not actually exist, they will throw lawyers at you until you surrender - see olga.net.

Do not take chances: this is one case where asking first is much better than saying sorry later...

Good luck with your project.

Bob.

Dont even think of downloading any music to accompany the text - see how they go after college students for millions in lost royalties. I think you need to contact ASCAP or BMI, the music publisher associations (I think this is correct) and see how to go about doing what you want. I dont know for sure if they allow what you want, but I am thinking they might, if you include the author/publisher information. I see this at the front of books from time to time. I dont know if any money (read BIG BUCKS) needs to change hands for this to happen. I am NOT a lawyer, so you are on your own.

I hope this helps you.

Hi Steve,

I used to make cards using my images with excerpts from hymns, but made sure they were in "public domain". Many old pieces are. I'd say the process will vary according to what you intend to use. I'd suppose that certain pieces of old literature, poetry, and positively many older songs are in public domain. That makes it simpler for you and there are many beautifully expressive pieces.
