Uses for filmpack holders?

Hello,

I was thinking of making (out of wood) an adapter for conventional sheet film holders for my plate cameras. I have one that was 3-d printed but I thought a wooden one (with springs) would be easier to use.

I have 4 film pack holders and one of them could provide the parts that slide into the camera. As far as I know, film packs (in 9x12) don't exist, and I don't even think they exist for 4 x5 either. Is there really any use for these film pack holders? I wouldn't want to ruin one if they actually have any other uses. One of them, marked ICA, seems to be for some film pack that had the outer dimensions of a 9 x 12 pack, but actually had film that was around 6 x 6.

I have film packs in the freezer that measure 2 1/4 x 3 1/4, 3 1/4 x 4 1/4, 4x5, 9x12(3 1/2 x 4 3/4) and I have the film pack holders for all except the 9x12cm, European sze.

I've not found any use for them except as a possible chassis for custom plate/sheet holder you're thinking of building.

All I ever used a 9x12 filmpack holder for was to hold a single sheet of film when I didn't have any 9x12 film holders... I still don't have any 9x12 film holders - I stopped trying to use the camera.

Polaroid film pack holders are good frames for Polaroids.

The ones I have are for a 9x12 plate camera. If you need/want one, it would be a shame to cut it up. I'm not looking for any reimbursement...

I just realized that I also have a Goerz Tenax that has a film pack holder, but the film for it must have been something like 4 x 6.5 cm, which is even smaller than your 2 1/4 x 3 1/4. There is an empty Agfa Isochrome film pack in it which gives warnings about developing in red light.

I also have 3 double plate holders for it, but I suspect that they are un-used, since we actually have film negatives from this camera, which belonged to my wife's grandfather. We don't have any glass plates for it, though.

I imagine I could cut a piece of glass or plastic that fits the plate holder and stick some film on it, but that hasn't happened yet. I had thought of trying to make a film adapter for it but this is a strut camera, and the lens is in a fixed position when it is extended, so anything added to the back of the camera is going to increase the lens to film distance and it is only a 76 mm f 4.5 Dogmar. And the shutter fires but it is pretty sticky.....

The ones I have are for a 9x12 plate camera. If you need/want one, it would be a shame to cut it up. I'm not looking for any reimbursement...

Thanks for the offer but I think I will pass. The film I have is Kodak Super XX from 1949 so I think it is well past it's best before date.

A good use IMHO is to convert one to a groundglass back by gluing (or ?) the groundglass inside.
The darkslide can be used to protect the ground glass on the lens side and the hinged back can be closed when the back is stored away.

This would work with a Graflok back but the hinged part would have to be removed for use on a spring back.

I'm sure that would work but I already have the ground glass backs for these two cameras, so I don't really need another. Having protection for the glass sounds like a good thing, though.
