Filters are like condoms--you really don't need them until you need it, then it is too late to put it on.

That said I have been know to take them off to shoot is certain circumstances then put them right back on. But every lens has one on it.

 Some progress has been made after all these pages!

Those who advocate routine use of the 'protective' filters are now apparently agreeing that they also need to use hoods and pricey multicoated filters.

They do? Not all of us. Try, "SOME of those who advocated ..."

Again, it is irritating to be included in a sweeping generality, especially when NOT true.
With repetition, enough repetition, acceptance will be inevitable? Nice try!

I do NOT advocate against or for the use of filters for protection. IMHO a UV (etc.) filter adds valuable protection, at very little cost in terms of quality to any optical system.

In summary, it seems that we've established that...

"We" ??? What's with this "We"???

(b) no amount of optics nor logic is going to affect decisions that have already been made...

Agreed.

I don't, except for very adverse conditions (salt water spray mainly)

I tend to use hoods to protect my lenses
