US Government Starts to Reimburse Tariffs

Seller has everything to do with it if they specify that tariffs are included in the sales price. And yes, I have now read the article.Large retailers (sellers) are likely to be called on to reimburse the tariffs they passed on to consumers. I doubt very much smaller businesses such as the aforementioned Japanese e-bay seller will respond to any requests for refunding tariffs included in the sales price.

The Japanese seller usually sells through eBay or PayPal. These intermediaries collect the full amount from the buyer and pay the Japanese seller only his product sales price. Ebay and PayPal then send the sales tax to the applicable US state and the tariff amount to the Federal goernment. So the reimbursement of tariffs will go to PayPal and eBay, who should reimburse the final buyer in America.

If the Japanese seller told the buyer they are collecting the tariff in the sales price, that sounds like they ripped you off.

Allow me to unrankle you. We're not the United States. That's the shortname. The full legal name is the United States of America, which makes us Americans. No other country in North America, Central America, or South America uses America in its name. Other countries use their countrys' names as well ie. Canadians, Nicaraguans, Mexicans, etc.

Interestingly, if you visit the USA and ask an American where they're from, they usually answer with their state or city, ie', "I'm from Colorado", "I'm a New Yorker", or for my wife, she;s a Brooklynite and I;m from The Bronx. Americans are very proud of their states and cities as we're a Republic of 50 sovereign states.

So I guess there are no Europeans by that logic...

I haven't been ripped off. I generally don't buy from Japanese or Korean eBay sellers. But I do see some of them list tariffs as being included in the price. (see attached screen shot). So I'm not sure how that works involving PayPal (does eBay take direct payments?), unless the tariff is listed as a line-item as is state sales tax.

I have made purchases from Germany and Canada, and either the tariff was changed buy the seller as a separate amount from the item, or the shipper sent me a notice for the tariff amount to be paid before the item cleared customs.

Europe is not part of any country's name, so the model you put forward of the United States being the only one able to call themselves "Americans" because it is in the full name would not work for anyone in Europe.

I've bought Japanese items from Paypal or eBay before tariffs and state sales tax was included and paid to the state by them. The Japanese firm isn't authorized to collect sales taxes. I imagine it's the same with original sellers, but I don't know for sure as I haven't bought anything overseas since tariffs.

I made a large purchase from a Japanese Ebay seller last year and shipped to me in the USA via FedEx. No mention of tariffs during the sale, but after delivery, I received an invoice for a 10% tariff. Looking forward to a refund; I need some film.
