Hi Folks

Lots of people seem to be keen on print exchanges and print appreciation. How about thinking of joining Circle 8 of the UPP. Large Print Monochrome - 10x8 or larger - traditional silver-based prints. 12 boxes a year that travel around the country which you put print in and it allows people to comment on your work and you theirs. Great source of help and inspiration - you can't beat having real prints to look at.

This circle is now in danger of being merged with a non-traditional circle due to lack of members - your chance to see some real print and you your work commented on!?

It would be a shame if it were merged. I was a member of circle 22 ( large mono prints) until I lost my first darkroom five or so years ago, and had to withdraw, so I can vouch for the interest that the boxes hold, and can recommend membership. Im fact early last year I tried to rejoin the UPP, but was unable to get an answer to my messages, so ended up joining the PPC instead. I guess what I'm trying to say Carl is that the front office needs attention if you are to attract new members.

Now looking for a way to improve my work, away from my local photographic club which is 95% digital and about to kill slides off. I am interested in traditional darkroom skills. Is this what the circle specialises in? Is it now defunct?

Dave..

The circle I'm in (2) specialises in monochrome images, of the 15 photographers in that circle, two do digital prints. Link below.

Thanks for the info, Dave.
This sounds like a good way to set myself some goals and get out photographing. I will try to get more info on Circle 8.
(is that a little pun? circle-8 as in the pictures circulate by post??)

Both the UPP, which Carl mentioned, and the PPC to which I now belong circulate folios of pictures around a small group of members, typically 10 to 15. It the case of the PPC we make 5" x 7" prints to circulate, enjoy and comment on. Apart from the enjoyment, and challenge of producing small pictures, it puts a little pressure on me to get out snapping occassionally. I have never though of the term "Circle" but it must derive from circulate as you suggest. Our website is worth a look, lots of information there.

Thanks for all the info and links. I'm up for this, I like the idea of having my (real) prints critiqued and the chance to give comments on the prints of the group. I can see this as a way to advance my printing and photography and be some fun too. I will make an application to circle 8 and get printing.
BTW, I received a book today from Amazon, Tim Rudman's Master Darkroom printers course. This looks to be packed with info, it's going to be a great year for my photography.

I agree, Tim's book will be very helpful to you, I learnt to make picture with it. The postal circles are great fun, and a good learning tool too.
