I am wondering if it is possible to find a cable release for my Herlango 5x7, mine was broken when I got it. It has a French version of a Thornton Pickard roller blind shutter. I've seen other options, but they require drilling to mount, this one clamps on to the shutter lever.

First I've ever seen like it. How are you at soldering. You might have to solder the old end piece on a good cable release. The thing I have learned in 30 years of messing with this stuff, where there's a will . . . .

G'luck. I've seen everything twice but that was a new one to me! It's what we do.

It might be easier to repair the damaged covering with some pipe and epoxy as long as the throw at the business end is good - you wouldn't get it as taut as the original. And you would have to be careful not to glue the core to the cover.

That's an interesting idea, certainly worth a try, thanks.

That looks like a bit of fiddling about to me but if you can't find another......................My
brain is already sweating.

It looks like a very short throw at the shutter end, is the outer cable on the release broken?
I'd like to think along the lines of Grahamps suggestion though but not sure about using
epoxy.
Heat shrink tape is a possibility if there's not a lot of tension on it but you would probably need
several inches(2-3 inches each side?) to secure it.
Possibly splint along the thing and then the tape? You could try that with masking/adhesive tape to
Ummm "prototype" it.

The throw isn't very long, when it is clamped to the shutter lever it is almost touching the shutter. But it does take a fair amount of force to push the lever out and release the shutter. The inner coiled tube is not broken, just the outer cloth covering, so if I can find a way to connect the torn cloth ends it should still have enough throw. I'll try the splint and tape first. Heat shrink tape would need to be large enough to go over one end, so probably too big.

I wonder if I can find someone to just make the clamp, and then screw a standard cable into it.

maybe, maybe not. It seem like what you need is pretty simple--the clamp with wing nut on one side, and a conical threaded cable mount in the other. It might be cheaper if instead of building it from scratch, they just cut the cable off the piece you already have and just tap it for the cable mount.

Maybe you could modify something like a banjo 5th string capo:
