Unsharp masking

I've been thinking about trying to make some masks for my enlarged negatives for contact printing (platinum and maybe soon carbon). Since I don't have any registration equipment to do it during enlargement, I was thinking if I made the mask from the enlarged negative I could register it well enough visually for contact printing.

Has anyone tried this or anything similar? I made a couple of tests the other day with some ortho litho film in d23, which seemed promising but I didn't get anything completed. I was picking up a weird grainy texture on the mask from something in my setup and ran out of time before I could sort it out.

I have used unsharp masks for years. I have never used any pin registration system, instead eyeballing it. If I used multiple masks, then I would invest in such a system.

I used pins in the corners to align later. Just prick the corners with a sewing needle before you expose and then once finished you can align them perfectly.

If Burkett aligns that way sure it can yield perfection, beyond he is a perfectionist like not many... wasting a cibachrome would be a major crime.

You may make several thin marks in the negative borders to help alignment, use an strong loupe, of course, I use a x40 regular handheld loupe, but the bino in the video is nice.

BTW, a nice video to feel what is top notch crafting.
