Unperforated 70mm in Mamiya back?

Hi all,

I have the Mamiya RB67 70mm back which is designed for perforated film. Can anyone share their experiences of using it with unperf film? Do you need to dremel off all the little nubs from the left roller or can it work unmodified like some say the Hasselblad A70 back can? Will it work just as reliably with perforated film thereafter or does it depend on the nubs for frame spacing?

The reason I ask of course is that I can see some nice unperf film for sale at a good price, plus Ilford have stated they'll do unperf 70mm in the 2013 ULF run and I'd likely grab a roll of FP4.

Wait back up!! Ilford said they are making 70mm??? Where??

Also, I think the only issue you will have is that the advance number might not work properly.

i think ilford make all these stuff on special order, probably once per year when all orders are collected

Simon has been on here a couple of times (google it!) saying that 70mm will be in their annual ULF run, which means it'll get cut if there are sufficient orders placed. Badger sold a bunch of it last year.

Anyway... anyone tried unperf on the Mamiya back?

Sorry for the interruption again, so do I contact him directly on here or is there a sign up page somewhere?

Also, the unperf often goes to a graflock setup with rubber rollers, you could replace the rollers?

Here I have one so I took pics...

It's kind of the same material as that "shticky" lint roller device on late night "as seen on TV" adds.

I'm sure you could find one and replace the roller on the perforated gear side and then it would work for both perf and unperf film?

I would just test it, I mean you sound like you have a lot just run through 2-3 feet of images and see if there's any issue with frame spacing or advancing. I don't think it would damage the gear just maybe cause the film in one corner to not be as flat?

Best way to know is just to do it and find out. Post the results as I have about 200 feet of unperf myself

I don't actually have any unperf on hand - trying to decide if I should buy a nice stash I saw for sale. So far I've only got some Aero Double-X and Rollei IR with the possibility of Aero Plus-X. I want to minimise modifications to the back of course.

As far as the Ilford ULF thing goes, you need to wait for the announcement mid-year and find a participating retailer, where you place a pre-order. The pre-orders are tallied and if there's enough demand for a particular size, the cutting happens in that size and you get the film a couple months later. It's mostly aimed at people wanting weird and/or large sizes like half-plate, 11x14 or whatever. I think in 2012 they ended up cutting both FP4 and HP5 to 70mm.

So "theoretically" we could get them to cut PanF+ in 4x5?? Hmmm... Gotta start a petition! Haha

Sorry you did mention that I forgot, hmm I really don't want to break the seal on my 150ft roll of Konica just yet or I would help you out. If you can get ... 5 rolls of Tech pan 70mm I'll trade you for the Konica hahaha

I honesty think it will be fine, if it doesn't work, cut it down for use with 116 rolls

Pan-F is not coated on the thick base used for LF so they won't cut it to sheets: it'd be really horrible to handle like the Rollei is. I expect Pan-F on 70mm is physically reasonable given their current coatings but I don't think they plan to offer that as an option.

I expect any Pan-F sales in 70mm would directly cannibalize FP4 sales, therefore offering it is a losing proposition for Ilford (more cuts, more wastage and no sales increase).

I have absolutely no use for 116.

Yea, PanF+ in 70mm might be a bad idea because of the image failure issue after exposure since it takes so long to get through a roll. Ok I accept the other options.
