Unknown film.

A friend of mine found two rolls of 620 film, not in any packaging, the backing paper is plain yellow. The closure tape says "Panchromatic EXPOSED made in Belgium." Does anyone have any idea what brand of film this might be? Any suggestions for develompent?

Most likely Kodak, B&W for sure, possibly Panatomic X or Verichrome Pan, who knows for sure, there are more that they could be.

Save the 620 reels you never know when you decide you might need one to convert or use a 620 folding camera.

Agreed, couldn't be Kodak. Don't think they ever ran a coating plant in Belgium.

As to development, the most common advice for this sort of situation is to use stand or semi-stand development, typically in conjunction with Rodinal. I don't have direct personal experience with such old exposed film, so I can't add my personal suggestions, just pass on what I've read. I'm sure somebody else can elaborate, though....

If you've got two rolls, why not stand develop one in 1:100 Rodinal and see if it comes out OK. If not, adjust the development time/concentration/agitation to get the desired density/contrast.

Well, I thought I had a brilliant idea. I took one roll up to my darkroom (yeah right, - closet) and seperated the film from the backing paper thinking maybe the leading end of the backing paper would have some info on it, I put the film in my dev. tank where it should be safe, and checked out the paper. No luck, all it says is "panchromatic film 620". There are the usual depictions of a hand pointing in the wind direction and 3 levels of frame numbers.
The only extra printing I could find was a bold "20A" in the center of the paper (up and down wise), this was located just past the start line.
Does this ring a bell with anyone?

In the picture you posted, it looks like it says 23 just beside the tab, which I would imagine is the DIN speed (~ASA 160). Is there more info under that sticky bit?

Many mail-order b/w developing services in the 1950s would give a replacement roll of film, much of it unnamed and unmarked except for the Made in Begium statement. It migh have been made by Gevaert. ASS u ME it is ASA 125 and use Verichrome Pan or Plux-X times. With film that age, many people suggest HC110 for it's gentleness with fog on old films.
