Under developed negative? Developer life?t

I developed 2 different 120 rolls last night.

Developer- HC-110 dil B.

1st was a roll of HP4+. Developed according to the massive development t chart. 8 min I think. Negatives look good.

2nd was TMY 400. I assumed I could reuse the developer. I did 5.5 mins like I always do with TMY 400 and HC-110 dil B. Picture below.




For reference, here are some pics of a previous roll of TMY 400.



I've never tried to use developer for 2 rolls of film before. I assumed there would be no problem.

I mixed it at 68° F, but I didn't take the temp for the 2nd batch.

Ahh just re-read your first post.

I've not re-used HC-110 but where I have re-used a developer (Xtol, DD-X, C-41, LPD), either more time or replenishment was required.

I see. Yea, I've just never seen under developed negs, so I just wanted to confirm that. I guess unlike paper, film developer can't be reused without some sort of compensation?

I'm assuming that If I want to print any of these negatives, I'll have to use a fairly high contrast filter?

Depends on the developer. Microphen I've reused, it says on the packet add 10% extra time per roll up to 10 rolls reuse, then ditch it (althought it got a bit complicated for me, I counted a 4x5 as a roll, when it's probably closer to 1/4 of a roll).
I've never used HC, but there should be something on the packet about resuing with time compensation?

Also, you guys are in winter still? Maybe room temp cooled it down a degree or two too...

There are two ways of using HC-110. The first is as a one-shot as you did. In this case you cannot reuse the developer. The second is as a replenished system of at least 1 liter of developer (dilution B) using HC-110 concentrate as the replenisher. Since HC-110 is so cheap and used as a one-shot provides consistent results most people seldom use the second method.

At one time Kodak, after discontinuing HC-110 Replenisher, was going to publish how to self replenish but the last I heard they never did. If you want to use this method then you are one your own. Perhaps some one on APUG has worked out the amount of concentrate needed per roll.

Thanks. I agree, HC-110 is so cheap I didn't have any economic reason for reusing. I just kind of assumed there would be no issue. We never learn from our successes anyway, only failure. I know to only use it as 1 shot from now on.

Haa, a favorite story of mine is like yours except I ran a sensitometry test in each of three batches of TMY2 sheets I ran through one tray of D-76 1:1.

The Contrast Index fell 15% per run. The spec sheet says add 15% time per run to compensate for re-using... I should have read the spec sheets, but I learned my lesson.

Your negatives will be fine on a higher grade of paper, 15% mistakes aren't that big a problem for black and white negatives.
