ULF TMY

Is J&C is doing another order of ULF Tmax 400 this year? I cant seem to get a reply from them. I know they're moving and are busy, but I'd like to get in on the Ilford order if the TMY isnt feasible, and should probably start experimenting with HP5+ before the Jan 15 deadline. I suppose the logical second part of this question is how does HP5+ compare? I know reciprocity probably isnt nearly is good, but can you build density like with TMY? I really like FP4+, but need the extra speed. Thanks for any thoughts.

Not sure where the status of a potential re-order of TMY is as J&C is in the middle of a huge move.

That said, I believe that the general accepted academic concensus is that HP5 will not build density anywhere near as optimal as TMY. In my testing I have found that it flattens out in the upper portion of the film curve.

That said, it is possible to extract enough density from HP5 if you shoot dominantly in decent mid day lighting. Where it will fall short is expanding to accomodate lower lighting situations. Printing on conventional silver or Azo Grade 3 is also beneficial to getting the most out of the film.

FP4+ is an great alternative or maybe Tri X if it can be had in your size. John at J&C will be producing his own 400 speed sheet film in the not to distant future and you can bet that he will be cutting it in just any size someone is willing to purchase it in.

I feared as much. I will always keep some fp4+ around, but was really starting to get spoiled by the extra speed of TMY, even if I had to cut it down to 5x12 from 12x20. I had high hopes for the hp5+ as it was precut to 5x12 too. That's good to hear about J&C's new 400, can't wait to try it. Anyway, thanks, you've saved me from doing some redundant testing.
