UK's upskirting law can put a photog in jail for 2 years.

If someone makes a complaint about you because you happened to take a photo of a girl sitting on a park bench this is what will happen to you, except if you use film camera they will seize your negatives as well......god help you if her inner thighs are showing.
Was taken a photo in the city a couple of weeks ago and someone happened to walk into my shot, held out his hand and said dont shoot, was slow to react and took the picture, came up to me yelling and carrying on, demanded that I delete the picture or he would call the police, tried to explain it was a film camera, didnt seem to understand so I pushed the back of my 1956 range finder as if there were buttons, said its gone and he went his way, I mine.
Yes you need laws to protect privacy, but it will have a consequence on anyone taking pictures in general public.
Safer just taking pictures of trees where no one else is about.

You are a little late to "the sky is falling" party. You have had laws against upskirt photos in Australia for over a decade.

Exactly correct. Blatant and explicit upskirt photography is a criminal act, but an innocent photographer can become ensnared by a complaint from just one oversensitive or paranoid person. There was a posting on APUG years ago by Ken Nadvornick, who described his misadventure at a county fair while simply walking around with a Speed Graphic. He had done nothing wrong, but someone became "concerned" because he was "a man with a camera".

Yes, that is the real, shiizophrenic, issue: whilst peple are clicking theirt cameras in whatever situation, the same an attitude is rising of rejecting photographsy whenever one likes. This is accompnied by legislation that is changing from prohibiting publishing of to prohibiting taking of photographs.
 
If I caught some pervert (obviously) doing that to my wife, girlfriend or daughter... I'd rip the camera from his hands, smash it to the ground, destroy the film or memory card, and beat the crap out of the jerk.

I don't care. I can't walk well and am falling apart but I still have one pretty good arm, a high threshold to pain, and don't give a darn.

This is not actually a 'UK law' as 'UK law doesn't really exist. This was for England and Wales. It's already banned in Scotland since 2009 (including kilts !)

I'm not aware of any recognized street photographer with upskirting photos. Merlin Monroe photo was staged and dozen of photogs were taking it.
Some 71 old Sir saved mentally disturbed guys from sentencing. Which act of humanity.
It is surprising what on this day and age UK rolled back in history of understanding humankind.
Upskirting has nothing to do with street photography. It is mental disorder. Same as showing your dinky on public.
So it is not about street photography, which has nothing to do with upskirting, but placing in jail people who needs medical help. How developed country which is throwing in jail mentally sick people?

We have this situation in Ontario which is not developed territory in many aspects. Due to deep cuts in public health system, police have to deal with mentally challenged people.
As result in some jails, including our local one, they have special wards were mentally challenged people kept in terrible conditions.

As far as I know Ko Fe the main perpetrators of "upskirting " are the paparazzi who do it to female celebrities. they are not mentally ill, but unscrupulous bastards trying to make a fast buck selling the images to the gutter press.

I'm into street photography for years and I have seen tens of thousands photos. No upscirts.
It looks like you don't understand difference between paparazzi and street photography. One thing is to take "secretly" and from unknown people, another is to taking it openly and from known people. Totally different situation and meaning. We never know if BS baby factory photo was bastard act or exposed deliberately by BS.

How does the notoriety (or lack of) of the subject determine whether it's OK to shoot indecent photographs? That's a stretch as well.

A high threshold to pain is a good thing, I too am not the fighter I use to be, now I have 5 seconds of fury in me.... enough time to do some damage.

I wonder why we haven't heard from the OP since his original post? He visited Photrio this afternoon so has been onsite. It may be that if his aim was to engender a frank discussion that has retained a good degree of friendly banter then there is no need for further facilitation on his part

I started a conversation once and walked away. She was a very pretty lady but dumb as an inbred amoeba. What was I saying? Oh yeah, her upskirt was very appealing but the 'visualization' didn't live up to my 'pre-visualization', and I couldn't decide whether to expose more or less.
