After much internal wrangling and turmoil, I have decided to take the cowards way out and go for the B&B (horse and farrier) - I know, I'm a coward - but all of a sudden, subzero temps and sleeping with 10 layers of clothes didnt seem an overly attractive option, that ond the fact that I am a southerner, of course.

this thread has been a bit quiet for a while, and the B&B didnt sound like they are fully booked, so who is actually going? will i be on my own???

As one soft southerner to another, I quite understand.
I can reconfirm my wife and I have our room booked. John Neal told me that he had booked the last double room, that was on the 27th December. So you could be out with the horses yet Leon.

We will also be arriving on the Friday afternoon. Would the bar of the Horse and Farrier Inn be an acceptable place to meet? Around 6pm in time to plan dinner? Any preferences anyone?

Sounds good to me, Dave. I've just had my room at the Horse and Farrier confirmed for the Friday and Saturday nights.

I should be up on the Friday: assuming I can get a cottage owner to let me arrive a day early - at the time of year it shouldn't be too difficult (I never book until 2 days beforehand anyway - they are usually very happy to get a booking at such short notice) and will stay the week.

The suggestions Les made earlier in the thread (Castlerigg followed by Borrowdale (I'm only familar with the twin bridges there) and also Buttermere (I can add to my "The Ash Tree" collection - though at this time of year, the Dead Link Removed near the Honister Pass end probably make better subjects as the Ash tree will be naked ) sound a very good idea to me.

On 12/02/05 Apparent Sunrise is at approx 07:30GMT and sunset at 17:15 (obviously, not in the valleys..). No moon to speak of: 4 days after new moon.

As a new boy to these things, I'm looking forward to learning from being around the others. Depending when my wife can get off work (she is coming too) we should be there before 8PM, so late for planning dinner, but possibly in time to join in.
I'm happy to go along with suggestions re subject matter, this is not a part of the Lakes that I know well.

Hi all. This is my first post to this forum so I'm an unknown quantity. Sparx pointed me in this direction and being keen on both cams and crags, thought I'd try and muscle in if the numbers are not yet top heavy.

As far as I can tell we're / you're talking a meet up in Threlkeld (Horse and Farrier) on Friday 11 Feb for around 6:00pm, at which we can sink some ales, eat, check the forecast and plan a route.

The other thing I would mention is that Fri 11 Feb will be the start of school half term for most of the country and hoards head off to the lakes for the week. I'd book your B&B now rather than leave it nearer the time. If it's just the Friday night, my experience is that a number of guest houses will turn down a single Friday night even though there's a vacancy, hoping that in the not too distant future they'll fully book for families wanting to stay Friday to Friday. A full weekend shouldn't be so tricky. Personally, I'll be able to stay just the one night and will have to head off home Saturday night.

Am I in?

If the traffic is bad, then remember to blame Leon for chosing the venue, weekend, idea etc.
I'm told that hotels will be busier because it's also the nearest weekend to Valintine's Day; whatever that means.

Im considering making an effigy to fix to my cars dashboard. The idea being that each time I get stuck in traffic on the M6 when Lakeland bound, I can stick another pin into it and listen for the screams. Im not sure that it will have the slightest effect on the traffic, but it will give me something to do, an alternative to my habit of shouting at the guy in front to explain his birthright and lack of driving style. Anyone any ideas on a suitable subject and the best material to use, and the optimum length of pin? I suspect that it will need to be fairly durable, and a good supply of pins will be required. Maybe I should use a Holga as a model, must consider this carefully! From where does one purchase hat pins these days? Perhaps I should just take a sack full of Holgas, and throw them at whoever gets in my way.

On a much more serious note; anymore thoughts regarding our itinerary , or do we sort it out on the Friday evening over dinner?

I think the itinerary will be largely weather dependant and thus probably best sorted out at the time. Probably best if anyone who has a suggestion brings a few notes (directions to the locale, what's there, best time to shoot, etc.) and we see what appeals to who. We can either go with a majority vote or split into smaller groups and meet up / swap around periodically throughout the weekend.

What do you think?

Someone also mentioned that people attending might want to bring two or three prints along to pass around during the evening sessions.

For the dashboard effigy, I suggest the obvious: Two-Jags Prescott - who else... You mean you do not have a local milliner's shop to buy hat pins? You will have to try your nearest haberdashery instead... Perhaps just hang it by the neck from the rear-view mirror and tug on it's legs occasionally...

Donner Kebabs! That half term holiday probably puts the kibosh on my getting an extra day out of any cottage or flat owner. What idjit wants to drag their kids to the Lakes in February - and how many 13 year olds will thank them for doing so?... Ha!

over dinner is fine by me, as long as castlerigg's on the agenda, I'm happy to go with the flow.

I'm going to try to pop to SunkenKirk Circle, nr Swinside at some point too, although it is a fair way south of Keswick so will probably go there on my way up

I'd suggest a gentle walk up Langstrath which is in Borrowdale and not far from Keswick, on a decent day there are some good photo locations. Good idea to bring along 2 or 3 prints. Can someone tell me where the meeting place is?
