Two films developed before breakfast

As you might guess by the title, I have been busy this morning and have processed two rolls of 35mm HP5+ in Ilfotec HC. I favor an early start and the film has all day to dry in the shower cubicle before it gets pressed into its usual role. I find mornings helps my workflow since my preferred s@anning/printing time is later in the day when my young daughter is asleep. When do you dev film ? Do you have a dedicated space or make do with the bathroom ?

I actually like to develop after dinner (in my kitchen) and leave the film hanging in the shower overnight. That way, the next morning I can look at the negatives and start the day with either ripping my hair off, some new goal or inspiration, depending on the results For printing, I have to wait until Mondays, when I get to go to a public darkroom.

Bravo ! My routine is more like Daniela's — although I shave my head, so no hair to rip off —, but my goal is to find a way to do both the early bird and the night owl routine during the week, and keep the darkroom enlarging routine to the weekend.

It depends. If I am doing conventional development, I'll do it late afternoon after work.

If I am doing standing development and I happen to be working from home that day,
I'll start the stand sometime in the afternoon while I am working and leave it sit there unattended.

My goal is to have all film done before the weekend because that's when I print.

Morning is for chores here. I develop film after lunch and hang it in the shower. Because I do a final rinse with LFN and then gently wipe down the negatives with a Kimwipe they are dry enough to scan after dinner. That takes about five minutes with my VALOI easy35. Another ten minutes or so to do an initial batch post process of the JPG's with Affinity Photo and I am ready to sit down with a cup of tea and look through the images.

I've routinely gotten out of bed at 4:30am since April, 2023, so that I can putter around in the darkroom. But before that, I brew myself a pot of coffee (grind the beans, French press them), and have either porridge, or omelette and bacon. I've been able to make a tri-colour gum print in one session, or a carbon transfer print. The bad news is, I'm in bed by 8:30/9!
I must have a dedicated space, otherwise I wouldn't get anything done.

In the evenings after dinner, I will start between 09:00 pm and 10:00 pm, if I have impressions to make, I will arrive until 03:00 am or 04:00 am, when tiredness takes away the fun.

In the mid of the afternoon mostly, except on Saturday’s when it’s in the end of the morning. I mostly do not develop and scan in one day. Scanning is mostly for a quick glance anyway, unless it’s very hard to print wet. I hate curling of the films at exposures 30-36, so one night drying is the least.

When I was working, development would be in the evening. Since I had a dedicated space, film would dry overnight. I might get to sleeve it in the morning, otherwise it had to wait until the next evening.

Now I no longer have to keep to an outside schedule (glorified way to say retired), I am more likely to do things in the morning, and sleeve film whenever it is dry. Having the luxury of dedicated space helps a lot. It was always rough when I had to use space that was in demand by others. And not necessarily rough on me...

I do all my black & white and color processing in the Jobo processor and hand the film to dry in the shower.

I prefer to develop while my dinner (as in evening meal) is cooking, as I've always cooked that's easy to work around. For decades that has always been my approach and I usually process the same day I shoot. I'll often take developing kit with me when away from home.
