Two Different Chromes.....

Here Agfachrome 50 slide film was always sold with its own mailer package; and only one (maybe two) places in the US could develop it. My older brother shot it in 4x5 sheet film for nature image income, and did quite well in that respect; and about 25 years later I printed some of them on Cibachrome. I still have those old sheets somewhere in storage here, as well as a number of my own slides. It had a unique look, completely different from the next round of Agfachrome sheet film.

Make experiment with over exposure and filters. I have seen some results of them, they tend to be in magenta cast due to the lost of ISO spec.

Yes, I will do a lot of experiments - I have a lot of these photo films
And while looking through my stock notes (I keep a lot of the photo material in a remote location) it turns out that I also have a few Agfacrome CT 100s from the same period (expired in 1987)
That's good - there will be a head-to-head matchup between East and West

Agfachrome was my slide film of choice when photographing people. It gave a very pleasant shading quite different from the boldness of Kodachrome.

I shot 120 Agfa Optima thirty years ago. But it was a negative color film.

It was overexposed like from basic recommendation and developed in commercial lab on low temperature in C41.

Different generations of Agfachrome. The earlier Agfachrome 50 had much higher contrast than Kodachrome. Only the later version of Agfachrome could be described as "pleasantly shaded" or suitable for typical portrait photography. Almost opposites.

Yes. But when exactly, I don't know.

Agfachrome in its later rendition was never all that popular. But I recall it being sold in 4X5 sheets at one big camera stores in this area in the 80's. What I loved for portraiture was Agfachrome 1000, which was available maybe fifteen years longer. Unlike their slower speed films, it was very grainy, but with a wonderfully soft palette well suited to portraiture; something really unique in the category of chrome films, and available only in 35mm and 120 rolls.

Back in the late 70s and early 80s, all I used were Agfa products? Why? Well I worked at Colour Processing Laboratories in Warren street London. Who also had the Agfa school of photography. All the film, processing and paper I needed for free. They even sent me to college for 3 years. The Agfa 50sand 50L was a very long process in time and length compared to kodaks E3, - E6 process. It was also a bugger to dupe, and retouch. I think that is why it fell from favour.

Makes sense in the light of East Germany's enduring efforts to expand its global influence, in which it specifically targeted Arab countries with some success after the 6-day war. Undoubtedly industrial relations between the GDR and Egypt piggybacked on the military and strategic relationship between the countries. I wouldn't be surprised if Egypt paid very attractive prices for ORWO products back then.

In the case of DDR support for Arab countries, the deciding vote was on the side of the CCCP. They were eager to send support to brotherly countries at the expense of their satellites.
