turning and raising/lowering with simpel controls

I am looking into a way of controlling the turning (side to side) and the vertical lift with two simple knobs. It is one simpel round peg with a spiral groove in. It is easy enough to do the raising and lowering, but I am looking for input on how to control the side to side movement of the same peg.
