OK at long last I've sent my 19 test rolls of various movie film stocks off to Double-X Ltd for processing. Eagerly awaiting the results... and of course I'll post them here!

Exciting!

I've been meaning to post on this thread, but bad news. My single roll of 500T has been at CineLab for literally a year or more now. I'm beyond frustrated, I've almost stopped caring. I'm sure I'll get it back someday, but what a total waste of time it's been. Hopefully Double-X is better... looking forward to the results. I cannot recommend CineLab, based off my experience.

Another user here told me he'd been talking with CineLab and they just completed a big long move to a new location, and don't expect to have their machine back up and running until July... so I certainly wouldn't expect it any earlier than that!

I just talked with Karl at Double-X and he's waiting on another person's 11 rolls that are due to arrive there in the next couple of days and then he should be running it all next week. I'm having them process the film and make contact positives of all of it, just so I'll have be armed with the most options to make a decision on how useful it all is. The positives will take care of the matching-neg-pos-materials problem with trying to put ECN negs into a C-41 workflow... but it also drives up the cost of course. But I'll do everything every which way and post some results here.

Oh I've followed up innumerable times. I've been hearing that they're moving and that their line is down for many, many months now.

I never expected that my lowly roll of film would be a priority, but I'm just incredibly unimpressed with the whole experience. I just sent them an email saying that I want it sent back to me, which is something they actually suggested themselves a while back. I accepted that offer and then never heard another thing about it!

So, take this with a grain of salt, but my enthusiasm for ECN-II processing has been hampered. But if Double-X has 30 rolls, that's a good sign.

Make your own developer and DIY. See the posting here: (there was a url link here which no longer exists) and the other one titled Color Developer Quest. Yes, there are some issues with color balance but tweaking it is half the fun and you don't have to wait for someone to run your film. Balance issues should be correctable in printing (hope to get to that within the next week or so) and are definitely fixable in scanning. The mixing from scratch is not hard to do and the materials are not expensive. Remjet is NOT to be feared.

The ECN-II films are really nice, cheap, and hopefully won't go away soon.

That company imploded and left some high-profile wedding photographers without their negs. I'm surprised the site is still up, but I'd stay away from it if I were you. I got burned too, but only a couple of rolls.

Dang... thanks for the tip. That might explain why they never responded to my email.

A lot of broken hearts and shattered dreams on the road to ECN-II processing I guess....

Yeah, it's been a holy grail/wild goose chase for me so far. I'm able to process a few rolls at a time with the help of some friends, but haven't found a solution so far for shooting it in quantity (I shoot weddings and would love to shoot 500t for receptions). I'm still actively searching though, and will shout far and wide if I come up with something.

I wonder how Double-X is working out for Duncan.. ? These guys might be the way to go. I'd suggest shooting them an email at least; I did in the past and they seemed legit and friendly. But, I'm holding my breath until there's definitive proof...

I sent them 18 rolls of ECN-2 consisting of 15 or 16 different emulsion types (plus one of 5285, which is the 100D reversal) and am eagerly awaiting their return so I can report on the results here!

That website says that they hand process the films. I find that interesting. I wonder if a minilab can be modified for ECN-2

Which site, ECN-2.com or Double Exposure? Dbl-X uses a cine processing machine. ECN-2 did process by hand, when they were functioning.

I don't think a minilab would be able to be modified, at least not to incorporate rem-jet removal. It's at least partly a mechanical process…something needs to knock that stuff off the back of the film. As for the chemical part, perhaps. I think the steps are roughly the same as C41, just the chemistry and times are different.

Hello:
I'm developing a plugin for Photoshop, After Effects, and other programs and platforms. It emulates the look of film and digital cameras using a special revolutionary profiling method.
Can someone put me in the right path in terms of, where can I get the rolls of film for my SRL like, Kodak Vision 250D, 500T, etc..
I read this entire thread, but I'm new in this, and I need to learn from scratch how to develop, using the chemicals, the right aperture on the camera, ISO, shutter speed etc. Any help will be appreciated.

Once captured on film, a correction for improper lighting cannot be made. See Post Exosure, by Ctein.

... unless you have carefully controlled the exposure conditions. Remember the film unbuilding to scene log luminance work and simulation work that went on in Photo Tech in the '80s?

Ctein clarly shows the difficulty doing that due to the film latitude. It is a problem.
I agree that shooting day light balanced slide film in tungsten light without filters is a big nono. But if you overexpose negative film by a stop or two and the scene doesn't have excessive contrast, the film's latitude should (and in my experience does) allow post color correction.

Hello:
I'm developing a plugin for Photoshop,

In the context of APUG, Photoshop is a retail establishment where one can buy Film and other Photo Supplies. The owner does not like anyone plugging things in without permission..

where can I get the rolls of film for my SRL like, Kodak Vision 250D, 500T, etc..

The Kodak Vison series like the soon to be discontinued Fuji Eterna series are Motion Picture Negative films for the ECN-2 Process. If you only need a few hundred feet of any of them, you can probably get them from a dealer in "short ends" - film that Motion picture camera operators have left over after a shot, that are removed from the camera as they are too short for the next planned shot.

You can use a bulk loader to place the film in a cassette for your SLR. Processing is tricky as all of the films in that class have the dreaded "remJet" backing. which is removed by the motion picture processing machine. Search ECN on the forum for endless discussion on the ins and outs of ECN

pm709. Welcome to APUG. You will find that some people here suffer adverse reactions when they read about things related to digital imaging like Photoshop and After Effects. (Many others of us here have a foot in 'both worlds'.) You might want to ask your questions over in DPUG; people there don't mind talking about 'both worlds'.

Thank you. Wow!, I didn't see that coming, I didn't know that there is a DPUG either LOL, anyway, apologies.
I'm a film lover, the most passionate of all, believe me, and I'm just very interested in develop film myself, in order to save its look for the future, (regarding the media).
