The darkroom music system is a serious piece of equipment. Just wondering what all you darkroom hermits are listening to these days. I'll go with Dylan,Copland, 50's doo-wop, Randy Newman and throw in a little bit of Cajun. Please, please don't say "The metronome"

If I'm to avoid the "m-word", I listen to Satie. Very good for timing film development in trays. First inspection after two "Gymnopedies"...

Usually just anything the iPod randomly throws at me. Oddly, I've found Red Hot Chilli Peppers makes waiting 3 minutes for print to develop fly by alot faster!

How do you people keep your darkroom music (stereo, not iPod) from lighting up the whole place? The displays on these things are really bright.

If I am alone in the darkroom (no students) I hear opera or similar music all the time.
this time of year (december) I hear Mahalia jackson - the messiah and bach christmas oratorium exclusevly.
really loud!
I have the main stereo set in the wet room, and the loud speakers in the dark room.. this way no light..

Niko - lots of gaffer's tape.
On the stereo - Classical.
Classical Music, or Classic Rock. Bach to Direstraights, Vivaldi to Pink Floyd, I particularly love a cappella music for working with beauty.
There is alot of emotion that goes into camera work.

Last time I was in the darkroom I listened to some Dizzy Gillespie and Art Blakely and the Jazz Messengers.

Today we usually break out the Christmas music. Since I was a kid growing up in the 60s, I am still a sucker for Sinatra, Dean Martin, Burl Ives, Harry Coniff Singers etc and from the early 70s (god forgive me) the Carpenters doing the Christmas stuff. So that will be cycled in the mix when I get time in December.

The Doors, Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Pink Floyd (Pre-The Wall), and if I'm in the mood Laibach. Occasionally listen to Beethoven, usually the 9th Choral. Also put the radio on BBC Radio 3 or World Service.

Only the speakers and a volume control in the darkroom. The system is just outside the door, where it feeds the workroom and my wife's painting studio.

Repertoire: Ravel, Debussy, Beethoven, Stravinsky, Shostakovich, Buddy Rich, Sammy Davis, Jr., Blood Sweat and Tears ...

... and in season: Rangers baseball! ("Wait till next year" )

Cheers, y'all.

Norwegian black metal like Dimmu Borgir and Mayhem. I am printing lots of moody tree/forest stuff at the moment.

Otherwise my own band, jazz and lots of other stuff....not country, though!

That reminds me, I often listen to Johnny Cash's American IV: The Man Comes Around. Brilliant album.

Skiffle band

Andy,
Are you sure there was a pre The Wall Pink Floyd? Maybe you are listening to a skiffle band (or is it skittle?) . Forgot to mention my lastest discovery. Music of the Andes. Wind flutes, Guitars. Very darkroomish.

A local FM classic rock station, Northern Native Broadcasting.

I turn it off for fine print exposures...those sound waves can make more than the walls shake, shimmy, and vibrate!

A mix of friends' music and others ...

Casals; Knopfler; Jerry Holland; Sweet Honey in the Rock; Anonymous 4; Kim Robertson; Jacqueline Schwab; Yann-Fañch Perroches; Jean Ritchie

.

Animals, Dark Side Of The Moon, Wish You Were Here, Meddle, Obscured By Clouds, Atom Heart Mother, A Saucerful Of Secrets, The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn... all pre-The Wall.

A scratchy, echo-flawed version of "Flight of the Valkyries". I love the smell of fixer in the morning.

... and you get that nice fuzzy softness in the prints from the vibrations if you're playing it at the proper volume

classical:
franz schubert, philip glass, richard strauss, gabrieli, joachim raff, ottorini respighi, rossini,...

but right now.. my computer is playing "Hundsgemein" by Ideal

Best [non-photographic] improvement to my darkroom was putting decent speakers behind my trays with proper stereo separation. The darkroom is the perfect venue for listening to new music and musicians. I just don't have time to sit down and really listen to and enjoy music anymore. Even in the car, I am distracted and interupted too often to hear a piece of music all the way through. Even I can divide my attention between rocking a tray and listening to music without either suffering too much .

As far as what I like to listen to. For radio I stream Radio Paradise at http://www.radioparadise.com Great mix of non-pop new and old music. Lots of tracks from well known bands that weren't their big hits so there are some nice treats of songs that you haven't heard since you wore out the vinyl album 25 years ago. An equal amount or more of interesting new stuff too. The website allows the listeners to evaluate, discuss and opine on the music and the playlist directly reflects the listeners preferences. No Rap, Disco, Techno or commercials. Sweet!
I also have a 50 disk carousel for my CDs. The remote hangs on my print drying clothes line above my head easy to grab in the dark and I've memorized most of the buttons. I can zap the player across the room while sitting at my trays. On that I have a big variety of artists and genres to suit my mood for the evening. Plus whatever I am into at the moment.

Jimmy Buffet, Lyle Lovett, Townes Van Zandt, Brobdignagian Bards, folk, REM, just to name a few......

i listen to the lovely sound of running water, and the continuous creak of the house.
