I put my Wehman on either a Berlebach 3012 or a Gitzo 1348. Either one works fine, but the Berlebach is great, as long as you aren't hiking a great distance. A very similar Berlebach is the 3032 which has a built-in ballhead, which might be nice if you are able to dispense with a head altogether. It allows for 30 Degrees of rotation in all directions. I tend to use a head on my tripods and so bought the version without the built-in ballhead.

It's hard to beat a ball head. I love my Arca B2, which offers independent 3-axis controls, and use it for everything including 8x10 and 7x17.

If you don't do much tabletop work, a good levelling head may suffice. Even my smaller one (made by Linhof, and at least 40 years old) easily carries a light 8x10 camera. This head weighs only 180 gram, but its cut-off ball is almost as big as the Arca Swiss Magic Ball's diameter. +/- 15 movement is enough for most landscapes and portraits, and relieves from fears to topple the camera. One might say, this is no substitute for a "real" tripod head. But if you have been using one, you may well think otherwise.
