Tripod carrying straps (in my case Manfrotto 190b/Bogen 3001)

Noticed there is a threaded hole on a cheap 190b I lucked out on the other day.

I take it that it’s for a carrying strap where the other end goes around the legs to keep them together.

I think Manfrottos current style is hideous like much other design the last three decades. So I’m not buying a new strap, putting it on a beautiful vintage tripod.
On the other hand I’d like a strap.

Anyone know of good third party straps with the threaded bolt and wrap around “chastity belt” for the legs?

Hi Helge. The original (vintage, as you phrase it) Bogen/Manfrotto 3044 tripod strap with the screwthread attachment is still easily available and rather affordable. At some point they appear to have changged from the "post office type" pad to rubberized threads in teh strap material. I prefer the rubberized threads so long as they are still pliablewhich hasn't always been my experience in "vintage" straps. The ones I've seen are mostly in the US and shipping to Denmark may make the deal a bit less sweet. Not too sure what you find hideous about their style... functionality is what really counts.

Third-party straps seem to be available, many with 2 "chastity belts" rather than one and a screw attachment.

It's a really good lightweight tripod in my experience.

I got ugly stuff like this

with unmotivated aqualines shapes and 90s ruggedised patterns that somewhat sticks around forever at certain brands.
Looks like something a dorky sweaty dad would lug around, because “it’s about the function, not the looks”.
Photography is an aesthetic medium and as such it shouldn’t be surprising that people have an aesthetic sense.

Also, it was not obvious that the screw-in part could be separate. The old straps had it as an integrated part.
The 3044 is indeed quite acceptable.

I don’t like that “grappling hook” look either. I think (no real evidence) that the design change in the strap was when the 190 tripod top frame was changed and the accessory screw hole was abandoned in favor of a stupid strap lug. I’d rather have the accessory screw hole but my 190 tripod is a modern version. That could be why many straps are seen without the screw-in part.

This dorky sweaty Dad finds other ways to tote his tripod, and wouldn’t ever be caught wearing cargo pants either!

I suggest you forget the straps for now and get or make a carrying bag of strong, medium to heavy weight nylon ripstop, with a string closing mouth strap and, a one and a one half or two inch, adjustable strap, with nylon "D" ring and buckle or Velcro.

The bag is;

1). easier to carry
2). allows wet or muddy, grassy tripods to be carried without spreading the mud and vegetation on your cloths, tent, car or floors
3). keeps prying eyes from easily seeing what's in your car or room and hunting additional camera kit
4). Has room for a monopod, umbrella or gun stick for long or heavy lens support
5). A towel or two for clean up and dry ups, which could be wrapped around noisy tripod, etc.
6). Makes the tripod easier to carry, and keeps legs from being unmanageable and spreading out and hindering you, or catching branches, vines, or wired/cables you're passing through.

A clothing repair or alterations shop or a luggage repair shop can make up a strong tripod bag quickly (once they start) or ask family or a friend who sews to run one up for you.

It's an easy task.

For longer trips yes absolutely. But for a short walk a bag is just one more thing to take care of and unpack.

For here and now Ikea makes some pretty nice and very cheap bags if you don’t mind the blue.

Otherwise there are hundreds of readymade bags out there. Manfrotto makes a few.

The strap is something less cumbersome and more integral to the tripod.

And also, putting a damp filthy tripod into a bag is just begging for mold and corrosion.

Agreed. Cargo pants pockets are the most impracticable and destructive way of storing almost anything. Horrible idea.

Fortunately it looks like it’s possible to replace the snap hook with something else. I hate snap hooks for anything but boats. One reason I don’t have a Domke bag.

There are others if you search “3044 tripod strap” and “Manfrotto tripod strap”. I seem to only see offerings in USA but perhaps you can find a good option more local to you.
