hi all - one of the first films i worked with when i began working with b&w film was tri-x. i shot 35mm and developed in d-76. however, i stoped working with kodak products for a while, and when i got into medium format work, i got in the habit of using neopan 400 developed in rodinal. the combo has worked well for me, but i am just looking for a bit of a change. i am about to get back into 35mm work, and was thinking about trying tri-x (at asa400) in rodinal to get a nice grainy appearance. however, i don't have access to a darkroom at the moment, so i can't test it out yet. for those of you who have experience with this combo, how do you like it? what strengths or shortcomings do the negatives have? and what dilutions do you find best?

The people I know who like this look use HP-5 in Rodinal. I'd have to ask them for ISO and time.

Yes, quite a good combo. You'll get what I can only describe as a full-bodied neg; no wimpy shadows and great midtones. Negs are easy to print. There will be quite a bit of grain, after all it is Rodinal, and that is the look you are after.

1+50, 11 min., EI 200.

Temujin,
TriX in Rodinal is my current favourite 35mm film/dev. combination. I mix the Rodinal at 1:50 , agitate for the first 15 seconds, then give 2 inversions every 5 minutes, for a total time of 25 minutes, at 20 degrees C. This is for film taken in sunny conditions.
I got this idea from D.F.Cardwell here on Apug. It works very well.

Jim - what about temperature and agitation?

I have shot Tri-X in Rodinal diluted 1:100 and developed for 18 minutes at 68 degrees. Wonderful tonality and nice grain. By the way I found this dilution gave less grain that 1:25 or 1:50

Mike,

What EI do you use for this combination, and how do you agitate?

Thanks,

Mike Sullivan
