What are some good Tri-X in hc110 formulas (film EI, dillute, time/temp). I normally use HP5+/lc29 or ddx and need some good starting points for the triX/hc110 combo.

To be more specific, fine grain, good tonal range, and more 'printable' then 'scannable'.

thanks!

The classic Tri-X/HC-110 was with dilution B - 1 part syrup from the Kodak bottle (not diluted as Kodak instructs) to 32 parts water. Development time was somewhere around 5-minutes at 20C, although there have been changes to Tri-X in recent years that vary the development time a bit.

A lot of people have used the unofficial dilution H, which is double the water of the dilution B.

I used to expose at EI 200, Dilution H (twice the dilution of B), 9-1/2 minutes ... I THINK that was the time, I don't have old notes, it could have been 8-1/2.

This resulted in negs of long tonal scale with good grain characteristics, good shadow detail and they printed very easily.

we have been using solution b at 68@ at 6 minutes for years,

Hi,Brian.

Now getting my best ever negs out of Tri-X in HC-110 !! Rating at EI 200 and developing as follows :-

9 mins at 68F/20c dilution H. Agitating 30 secs continuous to start, then 2 gentle inversions at start of each minute thereafter. Good regular grain, lovely classic Tri-X tonality, and a joy to print.

Have a look at these links. They have some useful info on this combo.

21c, 5 minutes plus, dilution B. The classic Tri-x receipe still works fine.

Hi, Jay.

I used to use 6 mins @ 20c diluthin B. (Approximately the same), with old Tri-X for years... I only switched to dilution H when the new stuff was introduced. The main difference is in the control it affords over highlights. I do print with a condensor enlarger so this is quite important in my case.

Regards, John.

I've had good results shooting at ISO 250 and developing 1:47 (5ml concentrate per 8oz water) for 10 minutes at 68 degrees, agitating for the first 30 seconds, then five inversions every other minute. I use a diffusion enlarger.

Note: I use a diffusion (Aristo cold light) light source as well. I would expect someone using a condensor (or point source!) setup to need to modify the dilution, time and/or agitation.

John, I'm shooting mini & medium formats. Is the time you state here workable for 35/120 or is it an LF time and I need to shorten it?

Hi Brian.
It is for 35mm. 120 should be the same or there abouts. It produces negs that print on G 2 1/2 multigrade with ease. You may neen a slight tweak to suit your equipment but it will be a good point to start from.

Best wishes, John.

I have shot Tri-x at 400 and processed with HC-110 Dil B for 6 min 30 seconds at 20 c with nice results.

Brian, after Rodinal disappeared (I had thought for good), I switched to HC-110 for everything. Tri-X has a smooth texture with this developer. I'd tried HP5+ in DDX (when I still shot Ilford) but didn't like it. Not enough oomph.

I can get the same look with Tri-X or Plus-X in HC-110 diluted 1:50 straight from the syrup. Easily to print, tight grain, and the results are repeatable. Tried all the popular dilutions, and settled on this one as my personal favorite.

20C for temp, 6-7min (depending on contrast shot & contrast wanted). Still have a bottle around, but have gone back to Rodinal & Studional from Agfa.

Hope this helps you out.

I will second this!!
