TOWER SHOE METER

Anyone out there know how this meter works?

We have good needle movement but the readout is confusing and doesnt seem to match F#s or shutter speeds. This is a Japan model.

There is just 1 set of numbers that the needle points to.

They may well be EV numbers some cameras have a coupled f-stop/shutter speed system that links to the EV's. Actually Rollei used the system as did many other manufacturers including quite afew Japanese manufacturers.

At 100 ISO EV 10 is 1/30th @ f5.6, 1/60th @f4 etc, EV's change with film speed hence that dial. At a set EV changing the f-stop or speed alters the other parameter to still give the same exposure.

Tower was a house label for the Sears, Roebuck company.

Yes but Sears Roebuck were the main or only importer at one point for one of the major Japanese 35mm camera manufacturers. My literature's in the UK so I can't check who.

Interesting the maximum reading seems to be EV 15, which is 125th @ f16 for 100 ISO film so about the normal exposure for a bright sunny day anywhere, my Gossen meters only read 2 stops higher.

My Minolta Hi-Matic 7s has coupled shuter speed and aperature rings which have a window that displays EV. The analog meter seen in the viewfinder also shows EV. Of course, all dependant on ASA.

Sears sold Nicca cameras as Tower. Mamiya, too. I think also Ricoh.
