Hi everybody, I hope someone here could help me. I'm a bit confused about one V700 that I try to repair:

It first came with a broken connector between the top and the bottom part and I thought that replacing this little thing would solve the top not working but it didn't. The bottom part is ok, no problem. It scans without trouble. But when I plug the top part of the scanner nothing work, just like it isn't powered at all. No red or green light on the front, nothing is happening. When I unplugged the top part, it just start again like normal. Do you have any idea of what could cause that? Or where I could seek informations?

Download the factory service manual here:

Sounds like there is a short in the transparency adapter or its incorrectly wired.

Thank you for the manual. I'll try to find if there is a short or if a mistake has been made when repairing the cable.

Does it have a warranty? Are all the transportation locks unlocked?

No warranty, I am just trying to fix it for a friend. And yes the locks are unlocked.

Are you using one of those "negative carriers" with a notch cut in it? In some of the Epson models if there isn't a notch, the lid doesn't know to light up.

I have no idea. What does it look like? For the moment all I can tell is that when the top is plugged to the bottom, everything shut down. The thing is that we didn't change the whole chord between top and bot, but just the 8 pin DIN connector. I was thinking that we could have made a mistake here and not connected the right pin to the right wire. Like shutterfinger said, looks like it's incorrectly wired.

For the moment I haven't seen it work properly so it's hard to tell what's normal and what is not.

If you are using the Epson Scan software the end of the black black stripe (it looks like decoration but serves a purpose) that runs down the middle of the lid will show a blue light only when the option 'Film (with Film Holder)' is selected, this shows there is power to the top, and the blue light moves along as the scan progresses. So with no blue light there is either no power going to the top, or you have the software set for reflective scanning and not film.

Does the scanner light up when the connecting cable is plugged into the base and NOT into the top? If so, the problem is likely in the top. If not, the problem is most likely in the cable. A failure of both is much less likely than a failure of just one. (Troubleshooting 101.)
