What do you think the chances are of any of the folks on this thread actually doing the one camera, one lens, one film, one year class is? So much equipment,,, so little time ;-)

I can just about remember owning only one camera!

I only had one camera for several years ( a minolta 800si), then I decided I wanted to really learn how to make photographs so I got a manual focus (x-700) that was interesting so I got a ziess folder, that was fun so I got a speed graphic...
everything after that is kind of hazy...

By bouncing around from one camera to the other week by week do we ever get the best from ourselves or the camera? Kind of like a jack of all trades and master of none. From what i have read over the years it seems to me that most of the famous and not so famous photographers we hold with such reverance used one and only one brand or type of camera and sometimes only one lens for their camera. Why or how do I and others get so caught up in the gear?

We do not always achieve this by doing so (and yes; definitely sometimes we definitely do achieve this by doing so), but whilst doing so. In other words, great photographers usually get the best from themselves and their camera, period, regardless of what it is or how many different ones they use.

An OM1 (35mm)
An OM2s/p (35mm) plus lenses (18mm, 24mm, 50mm f1.8, 135mm f2.8, 35-70mm)

A Contax G2 camera plus lenses (21mm, 28mm, 35mm, 45mm, 90mm)

An Olympus E-3 camera plus lenses (50mm macro, 7-14mm, 12-60mm, 50-200mm)

My "new" Mamiya 645 Pro TL camera (4.5x6) plus lenses - so far (55mm N/L, 80mm, 80mm macro)

My dad's Box Brownie

A Microcord TLR (6x6)

Ebony 45SU (4x5) plus lenses (58mm XL, 75mm, 90mm, 120mm Apo, 120mm macro, 150mm, 180mm, 229mm (Cooke PS945), 300mm)

Oh yes, and the digital compacts made by Olympus, Nikon & Leica...

Did you say you had too many cameras and lenses? :rolleyes:

Who, ME? uhh well y'see its like this, umm I was watching that thread for a while but, well *blush* I stopped counting a couple of years ago when I realised I was at 90+:rolleyes:

I don't know if it'll help you or not, but for me I have too many cameras if I have a camera I never use, or multiple cameras that fill the same niche, which for me is a pretty wide covering thing. Basically I have one tripod bound system (4x5), and two handheld systems (FM2n and 645 Pro). I'm seriously considering getting rid of the Mamiya system now because I just don't enjoy it's bulk for handheld shooting and if I'm going to use a tripod, why not just shoot 4x5?

Is three cameras too many? Not really, but I feel it's almost too many for me.

Welcome on board our merry ship!

I have just started to use the Mamiya 645 Pro TL for macro work (80mm lens plus auto macro spacer when needed), instead of using my Olympus E-3 digital camera because I think film give better results. I have a Contax G2 rangefinder, which is an excellent small camera for documentary work and low-light landscape photography when I don't want to lug my large format equipment around with me.

I will be carrying my 645 with my 5x4 outfit and will use the 645 for close-up and macro field work, where LF macro is impractical. I did seriously consider the RZ67 but it is too heavy & bulky to be used in addition to my 5x4 camera, plus the fact that I usually carry a 6x9 rollfilm holder for the 5x4 camera. I think the 645 format is an excellent compromise - and for macro work I do like the luxury of the AE Prism Finder whilst using the WLF and spot meter for low level work.
