Whoa, you can tee off with that grain. I would try D76/ID-11 1+1 with HP5, expose around 250-320 process like were 400 ISO film and you will get magic.

Thank you all for this discussion. This is a very good example of the benefits of this forum. One mistake and some facts about it. From this one problem comes answers with lots and lots of information, as all of us have tons of experience to share. I've been in and out of darkrooms for some 35 years or so, but I'm still learning.

Also, Bjorn, I never answered your question - I do apologize. But this is not the full neg. I have attached the full neg here.

Excellent! A very nice shot. This thread had me worried, as I use HC110 1+63 almost exclusvely and haven't seen anything quite like that initial scan.

Thank you Dave...but I have to confess that this was a crop and not the full neg. I posted the full neg (above) and the crop is a much better photo eh?

Well, if the first (cropped) example had been the full neg the grain/reticulation/whatever... would have been horrible to say the least. Somewhat comparable to the famous D-day shots, which were overcooked in development.
The full neg gives perspective and still as you found out, there was something wrong. Good thing it was an "easy fix".
