Per,are we developing our film there ,if so do we take our tanks,hangers and reels with use. Also can we use Jims bathroom as a darkroom.

Mike, I know in past years we've been too busy and too exhausted to worry about developing film until later. That said, I have a nice darkroom and will make it available to folks if it's important to your experience to be able to see your results. No problem.

I put together a lens today that I will bring to Tonopah. I had picked up a large old barrel with a nice iris that had originally been a whole plate portrait lens. I ordered some lens elements from Surplus Shack and played around with them in combinations in the barrel. I ended up with a 500 mm achromat behind the iris giving about an f/8 lens (which matches the original). It covers 8x10 with a sharpish center and fuzzy edges. Maybe Jim or his truck will pose for a portrait...

Curt, Mark Sawyer reminded me about diopters so now I have either a 500mm f/8 achromatic meniscus, or with a +1 in the front end a 330mm f/5, or with a +2 a 240mm f/3.8. The 240 will cover at head portrait distances. I've decided to not bring any lenses much younger than I am - which precludes all "modern" lenses;-).

This sounds very neat. Happy to oblige with the truck, ummm, you'll need a wide angle if you want me in the frame. :rolleyes:

Jim/Per- when will the workshop start on Monday(evening? Noon? 9am?) -- knowing the timeframe will change route plans to be able to make more images before arrival, perhaps stay longer at the Sunday site

In the course of my travels I just picked up another lens for Tonopah. Nothing exotic, I'm afraid, just a Perken Son and Rayment "Optimus" 12x10 Rapid Rectilinear in excellent condition with a 15 blade iris, probably circa 1900. Although the Vade Mecum suggests that it ought to be an 18 inch, it tests as a 16 inch. I find it hard to resist a nice old lens like this, especially at $40. Got to go cut a board for it.

Tonopah Workshop schedule!

Jim and I are (finally) ready to email everyone the schedule for the Tonopah workshop in November.
First we will send email to the first 20 who were the first to respond initially. If any openings appear after we get responses back we will contact those who are on the waiting list.
This workshop will be extreme fun, intriguing, tiring, educational and full of info, while giving you all the opportunity to photograph at Jim's "secret" places and touch his ancient brass!

brrrr, don't say winter. Say "indian summer". Tonopah is at 6000 elevation but we normally have a fine spell that lasts us until Thanksgiving.

Darn, Jim, don't use up all the good photons before we get there! Your lovely pics reminded me that I have a 12 inch Lancaster landscape meniscus that will definitely have to be in the Tonopah bag .

Wow, it says area51, I had to look it up on the map, it seems close to Tonopah and Nellis AFB. Ryolite is about half way between Las Vegas and Tonopah, I've wanted to see it for some time, it's an interesting area with a lot to see and do. Lunch at Groom Lake anyone?
