Finally something I can look forward to. Now to fly, rent a car and enjoy the drive from LV , been that way before, or drive down I5 and enjoy the drive though Yosemite. Is the pass open to Mono Lake in November?

http://www.nps.gov/yose/planyourvisit/tiogaopen.htm gives the dates. earliest since 1984 was Oct 17, latest was Dec 11. Last year, Oct 30.
You can always take the scenic route around through Tehachapi, or across Donner or Carson Summit or Highway 50(these three are near Tahoe).

Thanks Don, maybe I'll rent an SUV and drive, my Jeep has a new clutch and is in perfect condition but a 2k trip in a Jeep? I haven't done that in a few years. It's like flying a Piper Cub instead of a Lear-Jet. If I fly it's quicker but I would have to be careful about what I bring. Either way I'm looking forward to this. I just have to figure out where to stay, hotel probably?, and find meal accomodations.

I drove my jeep 700 miles in one day a few years back. When I got out it felt like I had wooden prosthesis for limbs, temporary tinnitus, vertigo, kidney failure, and an overwhelming sensation of creepy exactness beheld in a world that didn't bounce sharply at irregular intervals and wasn't constantly vibrating.

I read about the Clown hotel last night, one reviewer said he stayed there for $30 a night. Another reviewer said to just stay at Jim's house. Just seeing if everyone is awake. Looks like there are plenty of rooms there in town. Who said, "If you dress as a clown you can get away with anything"?

The Station even has an RV park with hookups and showers etc.. If my truck gets some side bearings in the diff. I'd bring my trailer and drive around in the truck. I'll see what happens, anyway it should be fun. Anyone going to camp out? That would be brave.

I have never been to a workshop. Any tips on what to bring? what to expect?

Ok, to be serious, but reading about past per workshops, you bring the camera you plan on using for your art, lots of film, a sample of your work so others can evaluate where you are in all manners of view, goals, equipment knowledge, processing knowledge, and desires of where you want to go with your photography.
A notebook.

It may be different for you seeing as you are flying in from the great midwest, but I plan on bringing the Deardorff with 8x10,5x7, and 4x5 backs, three or four lens, and associated support equipment (meter, darkcloth, tripod, developer, my personal developing equipment, and beer). I will also bring along the rb67 because I like it too.

BTW, if you need to ship equipment instead of trying to hand carry it on airplanes, I, or someone closer to Tonopah should be able to act as a shipping point for you.

Tim, what is your "personal developing equipment"? Are you bringing a tank line and an 8x10 enlarger?

How about a Beseler color tank and a Uniroller for 5x7 and 8x10 and Patterson System 4 with inserts for 4x5. All my 8x10 is contacted.

You'll have to ask per as to how formal presentations need be. I suspect not very.

I've never been to one of these workshops either outside of a school event so don't feel alone. I'll bring the equipment I think will work there, probably what I would take to any Southwest location. It doesn't matter that much, whatever you are comfortable with. I'm 58 years old, still enjoy getting out to new places and don't have a client to please, just me working at the craft in my own time, receptive of new ideas and looking forward to meeting some people who are accomplished.

Bring whatever camera(s) you normally work with.
Bring at least 3 mounted and matted prints.
There will be a presentation / discussion on the words that a great many photographers seem to be in love with: "personal vision".
We will look at prints and discuss your work.
There will be a presentation on image structure / content.
There will be hands on demonstration of weird lenses and wild cameras.
There will be a demonstration of pre-exposure, the zone system (made extremely easy), and a general introduction to view camera and tripod use.
In addition we will be out photographing every day!!!
And Jim will show off his lenses - and perhaps let you put your fingerprints on them as well.

At the end of the workshop you will be wiped out! : )
