TMAX 400 in 4x5

And here I was silly enough to want Ektar 100 in a 50 sheet box! Now they're cutting T-Max 100 down to 10 sheet boxes, and almost certainly hiking the price per sheet!

I'd love to see Ilford get (back?) into the color film game. I don't shoot much color film, but I'd love to have more options.

Surely the packaging costs more than the 10 sheets of film. I think Acros is dumb with its largest box at 20. Fortunately, Ilford still packages in 25 and 100 sheet boxes. Next Kodak will be offering 35mm in 12 shot rolls to match its 120. Circling the drain mentality.

I wrote to Keith Canham asking whether the 5x7 TMY-2 special order he's working on is affected or if Kodak is sticking with 50-sheet boxes for that size. He just replied, indicating that it remains 50 sheets per 5x7 box.

Keith also mentioned that, while Kodak is changing its standard catalog item size to 10 sheets for 4x5, he's been told he'll still be able to special order 50-sheet boxes. So, if any large volume users are really annoyed by the smaller quantity per box, they need only get together the minimum quantity and have Keith place an order with Kodak for them.

Unfortunately, Ilford Delta 400 is a far cry from TMY2. I won't be tripped up by the 10 sheet boxes, they are useful for some things.

I liked Tmax 400 but due to poor availability of any Kodak B&W film when I was living abroad switched to Ilford Delta 400 for 120 and HP5 for LF.

Best move I made in years for LF HP5 is superb.

I don't use that film. I prefer good old HP5 or FP4!

Delta 400 isn't available in sheets anyway so the Ilford option is HP5.

Delta 400 sheet film just might be available if Kodak keeps playing games. Ilford might just see a reason to put it to market. The bad news is that if they did it might just drive the nail into TMY2's coffin and none of us want to see another film bite the dust. Yes, Delta 400 is not the same as TMY2, but it sure isn't a bad 400 speed film either.

That's true Andy, but if TMY2 were to disappear Ilford might be inclined to fill the gap. Actually, I don't really care one way or the other since I'm happy using what Ilford already has. Not saying I wouldn't try Delta 400 in 4X5, but really no need to.

I guess I would survive if I lost TMY2 in 4x5 because the camera is on a tripod anyway.

But if the day ever comes that it is discontinued in 35mm and 120 I will happily spend $10K-$20K in stocking up since it is by far the best black and white film I have ever used, simply spectacular resolution for the speed, even at 800.

I won't argue with you as to the quality of TMY2 and I have said it before, on this very forum, that TMY2 is the best 400 speed film. That said, I find no problem using other films and getting results that meet my "middle of the road" standards. So, for me it's the question of "does the price difference warrant it". In 4X5 the answer for me is "NO". Now, in smaller formats I'd certainly say TMY2 has a real edge over any other 400 speed film, but 4X5 I'm not convinced.

That's exactly what I was thinking? Of course they (Kodak Alaris) could start out at the same price per sheet and then gradually keep increasing to price. It's been done before and many folks don't catch it. They do catch it if it's done all at once. It's called "sticker shock" and it's not pleasant.

This actually opens the door for me to stop by the local camera store and pick up a box.

Until now I felt like I needed an armored car for the trip.
