Time-travel back to 1988...what were you using?--B&W

-I use Olympus om1 & om2, and Yashica 6x6. Most b&w, agfa 100, and print in agfa record rapid in opemus 6. Also for color i use only slides kodachrome 64.

1988 to 2014 no basic change:
1. Tachihara 810HD triple extension field view camera.
2. Kodak Tmax 400
3. Ilford Multigrade fibre base paper.
4. Divided back contact frame.

It is both a virtue and a limitation of the 8"x10" contact format that there is no practical obsolescence, no dramatic upgrades.

Camera - many but a lot of work done with the Graflax Crown Graphic
Film - Kodak and Ilford
Paper - Mostly RC but some (I wish more) FB Ilford. I used Pearl sometimes and really like the look and feel of it.
Enlarger - Omega enlarger and a custom built sink made out of a Coke a Cola vending machine front panel. Made by my friend and excellent photographer Dana Spitzer.

Work camera was my still used Hasselblad 500C and Nikon F2AS. Weddings and receptions, plus a few portraits and sporting events.

For my own play toy it was the, new then, Minolta 7000i and the 8000i shortly after. I was also buying and selling used camera equipment at that time and had many other toys, but the above were my most used. JW

1988 camera was Canon A-1 purchased new in 81. Film was Tri-X. About then I thought faster was better.

1988 recovered from 1986 motorcycle wreck. Camera Rolliflex T. Enlarger none then. Getting back on my feet. Went digital for twenty years. Large format and return to analog starting in 2011-2012.

In 1988 the bulk of my photography was underwater photography -
I used a Minolta X-700, housed in an Ikelite underwater housing, and I used either a Tamron 17mm lens, a Minolta MD20mm lens, or a Minolta MD 50mm Macro lens depending on what I was shooting.

For films, it was either Fuji Velvia, or Kodachrome - mostly Kodachrome 64.

(1) Top most-used camera -- a 50's something Spartus Full-Vue Reflex.. the same one i use today.
(2) Top most-used film -- whatever 120 b&w was on hand.. i had (and still have) no brand loyalty.
(3) Top most-used paper -- whatever was on hand.

OK, please forgive my senior moment, and let's try that again.

(1) In 1988, my #1 camera was an AE-1; the early-production FTb that was my first SLR was at that time a seldom-used backup. Lenses included the non-SSC 50 mm f/1.4 that came with the FTb, a 35 mm f/2 my sister and her ex presented one Christmas (again, non-SSC), a Vivitar 70-150 mm f/3.8 two-touch zoom that was one of the first lenses to pass Modern Photography's lens test that was available in FD mount, and possibly a Sigma Mini-Wide 28 mm f/2.8 that focused to 1/4 life size (I'm not sure when I bought it; it may have been added later). The AE-1, 50 and 35 primes and 70-150 zoom, along with a flash unit were stolen in 1995 during our return from a vacation in Cancun, Mexico, an event that led to my changing over to an EOS outfit.

(2) Most-used film was Fujichrome 100, but it was a "photo finish", if you'll pardon the pun, with Fujicolor 100. Fuji was just getting into the U.S. market when I got the FTb, and I was seriously impressed with the slides and prints they delivered.

(3) and (4) Like others posting to this thread, I relied on commercial processing, especially since I was shooting color films.

1) Nikon F and Nikkormat FT2 (meter non operational), with 50mm f/2 and 24mm f/2.8 Nikkors, as well as a Gossen Lunasix-3 meter.

2) Tri-x and some Plus-x.

3) Ilford Multigrade II glossy & pearl.

4) Omega B-22XL.

I still have the Nikon F, and it now has an F-36 motor attached to it. The Nikkormat is gone, but I still have both of the Nikkors and the Gossen. My preferred lens today is a 35mm f/2.8 Nikkor, and the 50mm has been replaced by a 50mm f/1.4 Nikkor. I now use HP5 plus and FP4 plus films, and Kentmere RC VC paper. I still have the Omega, which shares my darkroom with a modified B-22XL and an Omega D-6.

1) Mamiya C330 (rarely used 35mm at that time) I had the 135mm and 65mm lenses and used the 135 more often. (still do today)

2) Panatomic X, but possibly PanF, I think it had the 'plus' by then. In reality, at that time I was mostly shooting color, a lot of Vericolor I think.

3) too long ago but probably a Kodak graded RC paper, but not certain.

4) a Besseler 4x5 enlarger in a rental darkroom. I think it was the MXT model.

I still had my Instamatic with the flip-flash (my older brother's similar camera used the cubes), and I also got to use my folks' K1000. Unfortunately, they developed and kept all the photos I took with it so I have no idea where any of them are now.

If 1988's too specific, we can just say "the 1980s".

1. Baby Speed Graphic
2. Ilford FP-4 (sheet)
3. Ilford Multigrade III (I think)
4. Lentar Enlarger (traded that for a Super Chromega Automega with 3- Schneider lenses, carriers, timers, processing tubes; the whole ball of wax) a year later. person whom I traded with wanted a "smaller enlarger". Huge score for me as it got me into large format.

I still use Tri-x and D-76 but Kodak paper is gone. I use Ilford Multigrade iv

That isn't all that long ago for me. The main difference is that it was all analog. I either had just bought or was about to buy my Fuji 690s. For 35mm, I was probably using a Pentax. I also had a Yashicamat. For film it was Kodacolor, Kodachrome, Ektachrome, Verichrome Pan, Tri-X, and sometimes FP-3. In the darkroom I had the same Beseler 23II that I still have, and probably the same trays I use now. The enlarging lenses were different and inferior to what I have now; I don't recall what they were. I used various Kodak papers. I had recently bought a DevTec color processor, which I modified with a fish tank heater for temperature control. (I still have that, too, although it has been replaced for work by a Jobo.) I've had my Anscomatic tank since about 1954, and I had a couple of stainless steel tanks and reels then and now as well.

I'm going back to how it was for me in 1988 and before! In a few days I'll be back to using a Kodak Model B whole-plate camera. Just the lens panels to sort out...
