cliveh-I just got that particular M2 recently and got the meter at the same time. I use to be able to discern the face of the sky, look at the shadows the sun created whether they were soft or sharp, the time of day, etc and could set my camera accordingly without an exposure meter. I did that with the first M2 I had back in the 80's when I was shooting a lot more.

I got rusty over the years and no longer trusted my instincts and decided to add the meter.

Take lots of photographs of your everyday life, store them well and annotate them (dates, places, people, explanations).

In a few decades, you will thank me.

Amen and plenty of family. You won't regret it. Store those negatives in archival NO PVC sheets and prints in archival boxes. If you do B&W wash good and either gold tone or selenium tone them slightly.

Yes always use HCA as well as good wash, wash is temperature dependent.

Only thing I can add is also to photograph your neighborhood and places you visit frequently.

Don't forget places like your old grade/high school. My grade school is no longer there and I wish I had taken some pictures of it before it disappeared. Old neighborhood stores are another good one. Things and places you take for granite now because "they've always been there" could be gone in a few years. I took hundreds of photos of my Mom, Dad, Granny, Sister, Brother over the years and glad I did. I've outlived them all.

I grew up in Charlotte, NC and left there in 1974. Just about eight years later it had grown so large I didn't even know the place and I had spent 29 years there before moving. The old Carolina and Imperial theater was no longer there. Kress's was no longer there. The old drive ins were gone as was Pop Miller's Store. Take lots of pictures of things you "think" will always be there...they won't.

Another thing - spend time with older members of your family and go through the albums and boxes of photos - date and annotate them and write a note as to why they're important. I have hundreds of photos made in Hungary, but don't know many of the people or places.

Needless to say, people don't live forever - so cherish them while they're here, young and old. Nobody alive right now knows for certain they'll be here an hour from now.

I wish I had taken a photo of the Laurentide ice sheet that covered Canada 20,000 years ago (it was 4km thick in places!) - but much of that sheet disappeared 8,000 years ago. I also missed out on getting a photo of the last major valley glacier in Yosemite, which melted 10,000 years ago.
