Those little 675 hearing aid batteries are awesome

I just received a Nikon F off of craigslist, with the Ftn meter. Unfortunately, the Ftn meter takes the old mercury cells, which are outlawed in the states. I found a good substitute, that seems to be cheaper than the wein air cells that people sometimes use: 675 zinc air batteries, 2 orings and aluminum foil. The o rings make it so the batteries don't rattle around in the battery chamber, and the aluminum foil completes the connection. Total spent (besides the batteries): $0.80. Much cheaper than the criscam adapters or even the little metal rings someone is selling.

The 675 hearing-aid batteries are one of the best ideas and values for older cameras.

Once in a while, you'll get a camera that requires the physical shape of the old PX13/625 battery.

But for most, you'll find that a 675 + "O" ring works fine. I've used metallic washers from the hardware store.

I recently did this with my Minolta Hi-Matic 7S Rangefinder and it worked great. Very economical solution.

John Goodman (interslice on eBay) sells an inexpensive custom adapter that you insert the 675 battery into. The resulting package duplicates the shape and connectivity of the old mercury 625 batteries.

No connection, satisfied customer, etc.

Instead of O-ring or washer, you could also use the solid copper wire of about 2 mm and wrap it around a pen that just a little smaller than the cell and cut it into a ring. It will expend and fit on the cell nicely.

You can also make your own conductive ring out of 12 gauge copper wire. With needle nose pliers and a bit of patience you form an ring with a small gap. It should have just enough spring to it to fit the battery. I am using this with 675 battery in a Nikkormat ftn, and it works just fine.
