Between the growth of home based 3D printing, CNC Routers, gear cutting tools, and a global community of design sharing, I have few doubts that "DIY Cameras" will grow in complexity and refinement, and that we'll eventually have a wide range of moderately inexpensive high quality cameras made as new production.
Personally I'm even exploring lens design and grinding options. [Coating options have been an 'interesting' subject to get bogged down with however.] Astronomy has produced a very strong community for mirror and lens manufacture, but so far the more general photography focused field doesn't seem as large - I guess there has just been more of an economic push in astronomy due to the desire for far larger and more specific tools than the open commercial market filled at a reasonable price? [Or are people who are geeky enough to make their own lenses just more likely to be drawn to space than general photography?]
